Is loss good for Matt Hughes?

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that Matt Hughes can get pretty arrogant! That is his one weakness! Matt said he could beat GSP standing up and on the ground! Tonight, he put that standing up theory to the test and he paid dearly for it!

This isn't the first time this happened! He seriously underestimated BJ Penn the first time around and he got destroyed! After that I think he realized he can't underestimate his opponents and he dominated his entire weight class! After awhile however he got more and more cocky with each win! After he beat BJ Penn in thier second fight his overconfidence shot through the roof and went out into space! Now once again he paid the price for it!

Do you think this loss will be good for him? I think so because his overconfidence has been brought down several pegs! I think he learned that you can't underestimate an opponent like that. If he did realize that then he will be a stronger fighter for it! At least that is my opinion! What do you think?

You forget that this isn't just some brutal sport where everyones out to kill each other. Its much more like a game of physical chess.-looney liam

No, I think the loss is bad for Hughes.

First, I think a rubber match could be a disaster for him. GSP has developed his game to such an extent that I think even Hughes would have a hard time controlling him on the ground. Hughes has poor standup, and if he can't take GSP down (check out GSP's air sprawl - he's ready to defend a takedown) he's going to get rocked again.

Secondly, I was not convinced of Hughes' victory over Penn. I think Hughes lost the first 2 rounds, and then won after Penn separated his rib by slipping out. Even the Trigg victory was a little iffy - I mean he was locked in. If Trigg could've held out he was going to sleep. This isn't knocking Hughes - Hughes is a great fighter who trains well, but he hasn't walked through his last opponents (Excluding Royce who was way too old) with ease. Now he's going to have to come back up through those guys and he may not make it through the gauntlet.

I don't know - I think Matt Hughes trains hard and has shown a heart to win. On the other hand, I think his only real strength is his wrestling. He's a powerful wrestler, but his standup is poor. I really like the champion to be the guy who exemplifies the best in every aspect of the sport. A guy who has mastered standup, wrestling, submissions, training, and who has a class act. Someone like GSP.

Hughes confidence or arrogance call it what you will was part of his toolkit to beat fighters, any person that has a lack of confidence in their abilities be it a fighter or an avergae joe at work will suffer for it at one level or another.
If Hughes is indeed "one of the greats" then i hope he is humble enough to recognise his own defecits and build on them, Couture suffered defeats and yet tackled them to a good degree of success even after his final loss he showed class and a level of self belief few people do these days.
Hughes can come back and become a champion if he truly wants it.
