GSP vs. Hughes II: Why Didn't Matt Go For Takedowns?

Before i start, i just would like to refrain all the gsp "nuthuggers"(is that forum term, because i dont get it..) to reply stuff like "cuz gsp is the best!!" And sorry for starting the 100th post on that fight..

Matt Hughes is mostly 1 dimensional : GnP.

GSP was in TKO a very well rounded fighter, but like most TKO stars(Loiseau for example), he is very good standing up, and Matt Hughes has to know that for sure, even by just watching his ufc fights.

Im not saying Hughes should of gone for takedowns right away, gsp was ready for it, but was Hughes so confident in his "new" stand up skills that he figured that his best strategy would be to stand up and wait for a perfect moment to take him down?

My opinion : Hughes had confidence that his stand up skills would be enough to be ok standing up and wait for a mistake to take him down, and i dont see why he would think that. I think he realised it after getting rocked, and he went for desperate takedowns when it was too late.

GSP gave hughes a lot of low kicks throughout the first round and you could tell they were affecting hughes legs. When your legs are really hurting its very hard to go for effective takedowns. Any takedown he did go for was not close to taking him down. I think that GSPs defence was to strong for Matt Hughes

unless Hughes never received low kicks in his career, i personally dont think it affected him that badly in the first round(in the 2nd, it was obvious that it did). Gsp had some good ones, but they were not on the same leg, or even at the same place(inside and outside).

In the first round I think he just thought his standup was a lot better than it actually is or else he would have definetly gone for some more. After the way the first round ended I dont think it was his legs that were the problem I dont think he even knew who he was at that time. He had no chance in the second round he looked way to hurt.

Maybe that was his game plan... I heard Militech telling Hughes between rounds to keep his jab out there. It looked like Matt was trying to feel out the stand up and then he took some shots and credit George for his takedown defense.

I think George just blew Matt away with his superior skills. Did you see that "Wow" look on Hughes' face every now and then during that fight? George just seemed to take it to another level. Hughes seemed to be in shock during the fight.
