as crazy as it sounds, i think that scars, tattoos, bullet wounds, ugly faces, ect... add character and would incredibly increase a fighters popularity. kinda like rappers, the more times you been shot, the more times you go to jail, ect... the more money you make..LOL

Exactly. Why else do you guys think the fighters go out of their way to "look cool". Tito doesn't have to dye his hair, he does it cuz he knows that's one of the reasons he is so popular. Same with Chuck, no one is forcing him to wear that mohawk. Melvin Guillard and Kevin Randleman have the option of bleaching their hair too. They all know it helps gain fans, so that's why they do it. Otherwise, there is absolutely no reason a fighter needs to have bleach hair or a mohawk. Bleaching your hair or growing a mohawk doesn't make you a better fighter...so why do you think they do it?

Exactly. Why do you think SOOO many people know who Cabbage is?

He looks like the doll, plus all those tatts.

Those factors add to fighter's popularity - NO DOUBT.

i'm a monster

i know this world is changin'
never gave in
never gave up
i'm the only thing i'm afraid of

No shit I like Cabbage but I can't say he is a great or even a good fighter. I liked his attitude and his hair-do lol and the way he can take a punch or 2,000. Great example!

Also Kendal Grove was a favorite on the show because of his looks, because he definately wasn't the most skilled at the time, but for some reason he got the most camera time. And Chuck, yea he's not a "good-looking" guy, but that's not what the threadstarter means (I don't think). Chuck has appeal with his mohawk and his aggressive nature, and I think a lot of his fans come from that as well. Not to say anyone on these forums are like that, but I am 100% sure that it plays a factor in everyone's opinion, even if you don't want to admit it. It's human nature, just don't base your entire opinion solely on charisma and looks. There are a shitload of examples of fighters who aren't as good as they are popular. Tito being one of them, you can't deny it, just look at his record over the last 2 years. He's honestly not as good as his fans lead on, but he looks cool so hey let's hug his nuts and say he is the best in the world. Just an easy example. Again, I'm talking about new fans, mostly.

I also think it could go the other way. Like in Fedor's case, someone already said he's looks out of shape but is massively popular. Well other than the fact that his popularity comes mostly from the fact that he is a machine, but his looks also play a factor. It's been said a hundred times, the guy looks like he never works out, yet he dominates his opponent with relative ease. Well, that has to do with a fighters looks too. His appeal comes from the fact that he looks like a normal couch potato but fights like a machine. Same with Vladimir Matyushenko, his nickname is "the janitor". He looks like a janitor, and using that as his nickname tells me that it is not unheard of to judge fighters on their appearance.

Think about Jesse Forbes...he was what like 19 years old and they kept letting him come back on the show. And everytime he came back he had a different look, but he was always trying to be in style for the viewers. There was no reason to bring this kid back 3 times, they brought him back because of his physical appeal. It's a subconcious thing and most guys are too homophobic to admit that appearance DOES play a factor in your opinion. Like I said, it's human nature. You're gonna be attracted to a fighter you think looks cool, but you may also be attracted to a fighter you think looks different or below average.
Id agree with you with coherent sentances if i wasnt out my tree. But all in all, i totally agree with you. My fave fighters are due to their attitude and "looks". Chuck looks like your average badass, and i liked Tito with his yellow hair etc

Looks do matter. But not necessarily in the way you are stating. I think people like to relate to fighters, and choose their allegiance in that way.

Luke Kumo is a good example. A lot of guys that like to see a scrawny, nerdy guy fighting, chose to cheer for him. Because maybe those people can relate on some level.

The same holds true for: "pretty boys", "ugly guys" , "gangsters", or whatever other genre of person you can put a fighter into.

Personally, I enjoy seeing humble fighters. I like St. Pierre.

I like humble fighters too, but as you can see in my top 10, Fedor and CroCop are about the only humble fighters on my list. In a way I don't like how Kid and Gomi are so disrespectful, but in a way I also find it appealing. It's exciting I guess. Luke Cummo is an excellent example, I thought about mentioning him too. Great point. Everyone has their own ways of making their opinions, whether it's their fighting style, looks, appeal, attitude, excitement or whatever. It all comes in to play whether you like it or not. I like Penn because of his skill and fighting style and excitement, I like Kid because of his skill and excitement and attitude, Frank cuz of his skill and attitude, Genki because of his appeal and fighting style, CroCop for fighting style, excitement and attitude, Parisyan for his excitement and fighting style, Gomi for his skill and attitude, Fedor for all of the above, and Rampage for his excitement, looks, appeal, and fighting style. Like I said, we all base our opinions off of these 5 or so things. It's natural and if you can't admit it I guess you have insecurity problems or something.

Unfortunately it matters in the UFC if you speak with an accent or are from another country. I couldn't believe how many dumbass "fans" have complained that Anderson Silva can't speak English or that GSP has an accent or that they dont like him because he's not American.

That's why the UFC props up guys like Rich Franklin and Matt Hughes by matching them up with opponents who are green or way past their prime or simply not all that good. And it's why a guy like Silva can walk in and take apart someone whose gone undefeated in 3 years and why Matt Hughes gets his cocky little face kicked in when he's fighting someone with talent and experience.

The UFC title holders for the most part have been a joke and could never compete on a world stage.
