Well, if that's true, maybe i stand corrected. I had NO idea the UFC was on the verge of bankruptcy 2 years ago - you sure about that? i thought their pay per views were always killer.
Yup, well documented fact. UFC was about to be gone forever if it wasn't for the TUF show reviving it. That's why guys like Ortiz came back to the UFC after leaving it, BJ Penn, Jens Pulver, etc. They were making nearly nothing, and now they can make some decent loot. You guys can even look in Wikipedia, from UFC 62 on to the present they have the purses listed (65's hasn't come out yet.)
The money these guys make is ONLY what the UFC discloses as a salary, that's it. Rich Franklin only got 22k SALARY, but he got bonuses from PPV draw for his name, Xyience sponsorship, whoever is on his trunks, etc. etc. etc. Rich did well enough to buy a new nose I am sure of that.
Just remember guys, the salaries disclosed are not all the fighter is given. And if you want them to up the pay too much, we'll get shittier fights and vets that get stomped by hungry newcomers. Just like all other sports. Example:
I went to see an NBA preseason game in my hometown, which is a huge deal because we don't have any pro teams. It's the Lakers and the Timberwovles. I'm thinking, Great! I get to see Kobe Bryant and Latrell Spreewell, a once in a lifetime deal! - Kobe played 3 minutes of each quarter and didn't do much, Spreewell didn't even play because he had a "sore thigh."
Long ago, I had tickets to see the Bulls, another huge deal. My lifetime chance at seeing Michael Jordan. 2 weeks before the game, the union lockout started. Never got to see him (or my money back for the tickets.)
We start giving these guys out too much dough, then we will have cancelled PPV's due to strikes, guys like Chuck getting way too comfortable in their money and going "Dana I think I'm only gonna fight once this year, I don't want to hurt myself."
Let it go it's course, the money is increasing, and the pay PER fight thing is GENIUS over giving these guys X dollars per year.
