I dont want to see hughes vs penn yet. To fresh in my mind. I think Diego should fight either Hughes or Penn before any of those three get a title shot. I dont think Diego is the #1 contender until he beats Hughes or Penn.

I don't think Diego should fight Matt simply for the fact that Matt may win. Don't take it the wrong way, I have nothing agaisnt Matt, it's just that if Diego losses, there goes another top contendar. I mean we can't see Hughes/GSP/Penn just keep fighting each other. This is what I suggest(many of these fights are already set, I know).

GSP vs Serra

Karo vs Fickett

Koscheck vs Joslin

Diaz vs Burkman

Diego vs Riggs

Fitch vs Menne/Fioravanti

Hughes vs Penn(in april or so)

---------------
GSP/Serra vs Riggs/Diego

Diaz/Burkman vs Koscheck/Joslin

Karo/Ficket vs (loser) GSP/Serra

---------------

Something along these lines would set up for many contendars rather then just Penn and Hughes. From there The winner of Diaz/Burkman vs Koscheck/Joslin would be a major threat, Fitch vs. Menne/Fioravanti would be a top contendar, Karo/Fickett vs GSP/Serra would either help someone get back on the winning track or bring some to the top, and of course the winner of Penn/Hughes would also get a tittle shot. The welterweight division has a lot of potential matchups and I think it would be smart to build up fighters rather then feed them to your top 3 or 4. You need to keep in mind that there are still guys I haven't even mentioned that can still be tossed around in this equation. I know my math may be a tad confusing, but the point I am trying to make is stuff only two or three contendars, give others a shot while keeping it fair and competitive.

Diego should get GSP after Riggs, assuming of course he gets by Riggs.

Diego vs. Hughes now is too risky. Diego has proven himself against some very tough competition, given him Hughes now could pretty much guarantee him a shot at the belt if he wins, or it could easily destroy his reputation if he loses, giving him his first 0 and pushing him further away from a title shot. Where as, it could do the same for Hughes. But Hughes will get a title shot eventually no matter what happens; he is the former champ after all.

Diego should get GSP after Serra gets his turn.

I understand what you are saying...and Diego has proven himself, but so did St.Pierre with wins over two of the top contenders at the time Trigg and Sherk. He totally dominated and probably should have got a title shot then but was then forced to fight Penn which was obviously a very dangerous fight for St.Pierre after proving himself to face the former WW champ. So why shouldn't Diego have to fight the former champ (hughes or penn). But many of you make really good points, with all the potential matchups etc, any fight should be exciting, the WW division is just so deep. ANyways I just thought I'd add a little bit of my perspective, but I wouldn't mind seeing Diego/GSP and hughes/penn, that makes the most sense.

If we are looking at it that way, the Diego should not have to fight Riggs. Diego should take Riggs..but I don't think he should have to go through both Riggs and Hughes to get to GSP. I would be cool with him fighting one or the other, but not both.

Why do you guys think Diego should automatically get GSP?

He hasn't fought Penn or Hughes yet, both of which are higher contenders than he is. (you can debate the Penn one...)

He should fight Penn first, then depending on that, it'll be time for Hughes to fight again. If Sanchez beats Penn, then he should get Hughes, and THEN GSP.

GSP has the serra fight, so Sanchez has to fill in some fighting between now and February, so he'll be looking at those options first.
