UFC 102 : Maia vs Marquart

Damian Maia vs Nate Marquart
UFC 102

Just saw this on Maias official site:

On the scrolling news bar.

Wow. What a match up. Far too difficult to call for me. Very excited about it though.

I think Nate will win. I'm not sure if Mia will be able to get him on the ground.

Do I really need to say who I'm rooting for?

Hey, Maia is way cool, but he's never seen anyone like Nate the Great. Maia's game relies on subs, and no one has come close to subbing him in six years. Not Dean Lister, not Thales Leites.
This will be a good learning experience for Demian. Sky's the limit for him, just not at UFC 102.

I think this is a bad fight for maia. he could still win on the ground but i see nate being able to stand the entire fight and i see him knocking maia out, possibly early in the 1st.

I'm not so sure. Nate seems the obvious choice but Maia has some truly beautiful jujitsu. So neither of them has faced anything like the other. Leites also has good skills but not as smooth as Maia in my opinion.

Good statement! IMO this fight will a lot depend on Maia's strikig (is it good or bad? only time will tell), and what the Judges deem a dominant position or a neutral one (when he's hin his sitting guard with the underhooks I'd not say he's in a "bad" position at all).

If the judges don't thik Nate's "on top and dominating" when he's in Maia's guard, Maia just might get the most good positions and win the decision. I'm unsure weather Maia will be able to sub Nate...

I want Maia to win, but I don't think he's going to take it. He's obviously the better ground fighter, but I think Nate is good enough to defend his subs until he can get up on his feet again, and standing up Nate will at least outscore Maia, if not TKO him. But my guess is Nate by UD.

I don't think Maia will be able to get Nate to the ground. Nate is a bigass MW and Maia is a small one, when I saw him at the 95 weigh-ins I was shocked at how small he was, he could make WW if he wanted.

If Maia can't take it to the ground its trouble for him. Nate is so far ahead in the stand-up imo.

My prediction, Nate TKO, end of R2.

Everyone seems on par with there predictions so far -- Nate is the obvious in this one, but Maia's ground game is phenominl. Pretty soon one trick puppies will be non-existent in MMA because everybody is getting so good at everything. Maia is not a one-trick puppy, but I believe barring the ground game, Nate has just about every other advantage.

I give this one to Nate.

Maia's jiujitsu is outstanding. He can pull a submission out of nowhere, he has the best transitions in the game that's why no matter how great The Great is I still believe Maia can win this by submission. It doesn't matter if you haven't been submitted in so many years, the truth is you can be submitted at any moment at any time. All Maia needs to do is get a takedown early or pull guard and he's all set to go for a submission.
