Serra Really Wanted To Fight Matt Hughes!
I don't think its because he's afraid of GSP! According to this article Serra really likes GSP! That is why Serra wanted to face Matt Hughes, because he doesn't like Hughes that much!
Reality fights! - Newsday.com
Even GSP said this is going to be a weird match-up for him considering they both trained under Renzo Gracie! Here's the video! GSP says this around 7:22 on the vid!
YouTube - UFC 65: Press Conference Part 2 - by boxingscene.com
So here's my question! If a fighter was fighting somebody they like, would it effect them mentally and not fight as aggressively like they would any other person? If it does then how will it effect both Matt Serra and GSP performance in Feburary?

Yes, look at what happened to GSP when he fought his idol, Matt Hughes the first time. The dude didn't even look into Matt's eyes durning the staredown and made a rookie type of mistake, by over committing on that submission. So I know GSP is past that mentality. GSP has the belt, he's going to stop anyone that's in his way. It don't matter if they trained with the same Teacher or not! The same goes with Serra. Serra knows this is his last chance in the UFC, so he's not going to be "nice" in the ring and will be very aggressive trying to take GSP down.
I just don't see Serra beating GSP. I can already see Serra getting a knee to the face or a high kick when he looks down as he shoots in.

Serra did seem pretty chummy with GSP on TUF...I can see how it must suck to fight a dude that you're friends with. Probably takes a useful element out of the equation...the "I want to cave my opponents fcuking head in" element.
Then again the fight between Scotty Smith and Pete Sell on the TUF finale was pretty goddamn wicked and they're pretty tight. At least they used to be

I actually think that it was kind of dumb for GSP to be a coach on the show. im not saying he is a bad coach or anything but they should have known there was a good chance that the winner would be fighting him. He is anice guy so im sure he made friends with everyone on the show and i hope this dosnt affect the fight.

I believe the friendship thing is a part of it, but I also see this a different way. I think there is another reason Serra would rather fight Hughes. The reason is that he would have a better chance to beat Hughes than he would GSP (This is no disrespect to Hughes).
If Serra fought Hughes he would at least have a chance to win(however small). In the stand-up they would be about equal though Hughes would have a definitive reach advantage. However we all know this would be a fight that would wind up on the ground. Serra wouldn't have much chance of taking Hughes down unless he caught his leg on a kick like GSP did, but Hughes could take Serra down whenever he damn well would feel like it, and sooner or later the wrestler instinct would kick in and he would. On the ground Serra would be out-sized, over-powered, and probably out-skilled too, but he would still have a chance of catching Hughes in a submission. Not much of a chance, but a chance nontheless.
I don't really give Serra a chance to beat GSP, I know anything is possible, but realistically it ain't going to. Unless Georges makes a huge mistake or decides to take the fight to the ground (major tactical error if he does this) himself, this fight will take place standing up and trading blows. Serra can't take GSP to the ground, no way no how. The fight will look a lot like Hughes vs. GSP 2 in that you will see Serra try to shoot a few takedowns and try to clinch GSP and get a bodylock/push him against the cage and Georges will stuff his takedowns and toss him off like a ragdoll each time. This will leave the fight as a striking match. Matt Serra cannot beat GSP in a striking match. Zero chance.

I just hope GSP doenst take the fight too lightly...I mean christ it would be difficult for him not to, it's Matt Serra for crying out loud...but weirder things have happened, someone slips, a lucky backfist lands, etc...
I'll honestly cry if Matt Serra pulls some one in a million lucky move out of his ass and wins. It's nothing personal, I just think he needs to back to his little school and continue teaching eighth graders how to mount each other. He had his shot and he couldn't cut it.

Well, St. Pierre has probably gotten over that mental issue after beating his hero Matt Hughes, so I do not think it will affect him.
I also doubt it will affect Serra either, but who knows.
It will be 25min of business and then they can get back to being friends. Hughes' would have been a better match up for Serra anyways, so I bet that he was like "****" when St. Pierre won. xD
