Am I underestimating Shogun's abilities? I was thinking he didnt stand a chance against Machida but maybe I'm wrong. His UFC career has been short and nothing to overly brag about.
Who has Shogun beat in the past?
|
...Good point. Shogun has great abilities, just like Rashad Evans does. I like Shogun but he has never faced such a well-rounded, patient, elusive, unpredictable fighter like Machida. Lyoto has shown no weaknesses. All but 2 of Shogun's wins were in Pride. Shogun has not been impressive in the UFC with a 2-1 record. Lost to Griffin. Looked sad against Coleman and beat Liddell who was on his last leg. Shogun will miss many of his strikes like everyone else who's fought Lyoto.
...He will get frustrated and become more aggressive, chase Machida and he will get caught. Now that Lyoto has become aggressive when he hurts you makes him even more dangerous. Whatever Shogun brings to the table, Machida will be ready for. Shogun will get KO'd...

The only way this will be one of the greatest LHW title fights ever is if there's a huge upset and Shogun wins.

Yea, I'm very excited for the fight, but I think Shouguns the 5th best 205er. To have the prehype of one of the greatest matches ever, I think you need the top 2 guys or 2 of the concensus top 3 guys.

I think Shogun needed another fight....
Since his loss to Forest he's beaten 2 aging UFC stars. Not really worthy of a title shot IMO.
If he was still at his prime then perhaps you could call it a great match up but I see nothing but a win for Machida. I also agree with the poster above who said it will only be a classic if Shogun wins.

I guess technically speaking this is a huge fight between 2 of the best fighters in the world...but I would have to agree that the fight will most likely be fairly one-sided for Machida. I understand Shogun's abilities but I just don't feel like he'll be the one to figure machida out.

A perfectly healthy Shogun is a great fighter. He jsut doesn't have the style to beat Machida. People have tried to push the pace against him, and we've all seen how that worked out.

Who knows though? Machida hasnt faced a guy like Shogun before. I think Shoguns ground game is very good when he is in shape and if he can get Machida down there he might have a good chance but really no way of telling. I want to see how Machida deals with Shoguns striking it is much much diferent than Rashads or anyone else. How will he do if Shogun clinches him. Like I definetly think Machida is the favorite but I really am not sure how the fight is going to go. I dont think it will be like the Rashad fight. He had a bad gameplan and I think Shogun will have a better one.

I don't think it will be like the Rashad fight either. I think it will be more like the Thiago fight. Shogun, like Thiago, likes to come forward with his wild striking. Also, he is a skilled grappler who, for whatever reason, tends to prefer to strike instead. Shogun's best chance at winning this fight is on the ground, but I don't know if he can get the fight to the mat, or if he'll even try to take it there.

For a 27 year old he's done alot, and I'd love to see him get back to his PRIDE form against Machida, if he does he'll definitely have a chance. I certainly wouldn't write Shogun off, I think he could pull off a big surprise, I hope so, I like Shogun alot.

Yeah, I'm with you man. Shogun was a cold blooded killer in PRIDE. 13 knockouts in 18 fights ? Somebody tell me why thats not impressive ? I could see the PRIDE Shogun beating Machida, just not sure if thats the Shogun that will show up to this fight.
