Couture Vs. Nog Likely For Next Title Shot
Quote:

Randy Couture and Rodrigo Nogueira headline UFC 102 in Portland on Saturday night in a legends of MMA heavyweight match-up, but the two veteran fighters know it's a number one contender's bout with a title shot just over the horizon for the victor.
"That's been tossed around," Couture told the media on Wednesday when asked about the winner getting a possible championship bout with the winner between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin, who headline UFC 106 on Nov. 21.
"When the dust settles they'll decide what they want to do. Everybody is talking about 205 and this, that and the other thing. That stuff will all be there. It will take care of itself, but it sounds like this may be a title elimination type of deal where it will put us back in the number one contenders status."
The three-time UFC heavyweight champion and two-time UFC light heavyweight titleholder has not ruled out the possibility of moving back to the 205-pound division. Asked about a potential match up with UFC middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva in the light heavyweight division, Couture commented, "I am intrigued by interesting fights and it certainly doesn't get more interesting than that."
At 46 years old, Couture continues to defy Father Time, and says he's never felt better.
"As far as athletically, I feel like I’m the best athlete I've ever been right now. I can't explain that other than I've just managed to keep a fairly high fitness level, stayed focused," said the former assistant wrestling coach and strength and conditioning coach for Oregon State University. "I think as we get older we tend to get smarter and eliminate a lot things that are distractions and refine training tactics and technique.
“I think I've tactically and technically gotten a lot better. I'm a more fit athlete than I was when I started this 12 years ago."

likely = if randy wins, wich is ridicules. Ive got nothing but love for Randy but this lose - win - titleshot set-up they got for couture is straight up unfair for the other contenders ( dos santos, velasquez )

I dunno I've seen bits of Randy's training so far and he looks very sharp, and although I don't think he's the best contender for Brock right now, I'd still like to see a rematch, cause the natural's a legend.

I'm pretty sure its been said that if Brown Pride wins his next fight against Rothwell he will get the next title shot. But with the way the UFC hands out title shots who knows.

I doubt the winner of this fight gets an immediate shot. If Valasquez wins his fight he likely gets the next shot, since he and Carwin were supposed to be fighting for it anyway.

If Brown Pride loses then I can see the winner of this fight getting the next title shot. Another guy who should be in the running is Junior do Santos if he beats Cro Cop.

None taken. I'm just looking at it realistically. Sure Randy and Nog are legends and want to fight for the belt. But Cain and Carwin were actually next in line. Whoever won, got a shot. Lesnar told Dana he wanted to fight and not wait, so Dana leapfrogged Cain and gave Carwin the shot for obvious reasons.
What should happen is if Cain wins he should fight the winner of Couture/Nog for the next shot.
Fairness would say Couture and Nog would both have to fight at least one more fight before getting another shot since whoever wins will only be 1 win out of losing for the championship or interim.
Valasquez is undefeated in the UFC and is coming off of a win over Kongo. 1 more win should get him a sure fire shot. I don't care how much of legends Couture or Nog are.

I don't want to see either guy get smashed
Even my dad didn't like the Lesnar vs Couture fight because of the weight difference. Lesnar stood up for most of the fight and STILL beat Randy. People don't want to see Couture beat up.
And if Herring and company can hurt Nog that bad, I never want to see him vs Lesnar. I'd be as happy as the next guy if he subbed Brock, but come on, get real.

Agreed. Randy was so overmatched the first time he fought Brock that (a) I don't think a win over past-his-prime Big Nog should earn him another shot at Lesnar right away and (b) it wouldn't be good for pay per view buys in Dana's eyes, right?
I see it this way...
IF RANDY WINS
- He has to fight once more -- against Cro Cop, let's say
- Velazquez gets winner of Carwin/Lesnar
- Winner of Randy/Crop cop gets winner of that fight
IF BIG NOG WINS
- Title shot against winner of Lesnar/Carwin (doesn't deserve it more than Randy but at least he hasn't fought Lesnar, so it would be good for PPV buys)
- Randy fights Velazquez
- Winner of Randy/Velazquez gets winner of Nogueira/(carwin or lesnar)
what do you think? In reality, I think Couture will drop down to LHW if he loses.

I want to see a rematch. I think Randy has a definite shot at beating Brock if he can avoid the Canned Hams.
Also, I would favor Randy over Cain all day. Randy is a better wrestler IMO, and would work him.
