Maybe it's simply a case of Randy wanting to have more fun? He's not stupid. He knows he would have stood a better chance playing to his own strengths, but maybe at 45 he feels bored with fighting his style and wants to challenge other fighters using other disciplines and techniques. The old Randy would have tried to nullify Nogs boxing and wear him down. This version wants to box with Nog cause it's so much more fun.
All the above is from my perspective and completely speculative... to be clear.

I think there's truth in what you're saying. Randy does want to stretch himself, have some fun and advance his game etc. but I think it's a question of balance. His new skills should complement his old skills, not replace them. IMO he's gone a little too far one way and if he doesn't address the issue, he's in serious danger of finishing his career with a long string of losses.

I'm pretty sure Fedor would make Randy rethink fighting for a while.

Seemed almost like Randy didn't train enough for Nogueira's standup style, like he just assumed he was better on the feet. He did admit post-fight that he was surprised he got outclassed standing like that.

... and this.
I just want to say, one more time, that I dont think Randy Can beat Fedor. I'm simply debating that Nog is so different from Fedor, that using saturdays fight as a guage is a little pointless.
Great thread this. So civil. Why cant they all be like that?

If he took the same approach with Fedor, he wouldn't make it out of the first round.

When Randy did clinch Nog did a great job neutralizing. Also, Nog wasn't scared to drop to the ground if needed. Randy didn't try to often to clinch and dirty box but when he did it wasn't overly effective.

Ageed randy wasnt really efective the few times they were in the clinch and NOG was def wantin to take it to the ground, hell he tried to pull guard at one point, but Randy slipped out he wasnt havin that.....
This fight has made me re-evaluate the Mir fight and although i do believe Mirs striking has improved vastly.......
I think they need to fight again to bring legitimacy to his win the first time.....Nog looked like a withered old man when he fought Mir...
Obviously there was somthing wrong....wonder what frank thinks about that

Fedor is like 5 times quicker than Nog, he would've ended the fight quick without a scratch on him..via gnp tko or sub...
