Fight Night Bonuses & Awards

UFC Fight Night 19 bonuses: Diaz, Stephens, Quarry and Credeur earn $30K each
by John Morgan and Dann Stupp on Sep 16, 2009 at 10:50 pm ET
OKLAHOMA CITY – Nate Diaz, Jeremy Stephens, Nate Quarry and Tim Credeur all won $30,000 fight-night bonuses at UFC Fight Night 19.

Diaz earned a Submission of the Night bonus, Stephens earned the night's Knockout of the Night award, and Quarry and Credeur won Fight of the Night honors for their performances, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) confirmed with UFC officials after the show.

The event took place Wednesday at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City and aired on Spike TV.

Diaz, fighting fellow lightweight Melvin Guillard in the night's main event, secured his bonus with a second-round submission via guillotine choke, which has proven something of an Achilles' heel for Guillard. Diaz suffered a good amount of damage in the first round but kept his poise to pull out the victory, which snapped his two-fight losing streak.

Diaz, amazingly, has now won five consecutive fight-night awards. He followed a Submission of the Night bonus in February 2008 with three straight Fight of the Night awards before his latest bonus.

Stephens, meanwhile, picked up the Knockout of the Night award for his first-round TKO (due to a cut) of Justin Buccholz. Stephens technically won the award by default since the 10-fight lineup featured no other knockouts. However, Stephens' offensive display was impressive, and he was close to finishing Buccholz even without the cut.

Finally, Quarry and Credeur were favorites for the award as soon as their three-rounder ended. The middleweight match-up kicked off the televised portion of the event and featured multiple knockdowns for each fighter.

After being knocked down multiple times in the first round, Quarry stormed back and ultimately secured the unanimous-decision win via scores of 29-28, 29-27 and 29-28.

That was an awesome card. On most other cards the Condit-Ellenburger fight and Huerta-Maynard fight would have got the FOTN

That was a suprisingly good card, not a boring fight the whole night. If they could only do that every time.

The Diaz submission bothered me. I won't say it was a fix, I was just surprised at how slow Guillards reaction was to the guillotine.

Before tonight Guillard had 7 losses and 6 of them were by submission. Diaz has a black belt in BJJ under Cesar Gracie. So we have a guy with awful sub defense going against a guy with great submissions. So why exactly does Guillard getting choked out yet again surprise you?

This. Guillard has a long history of being completely retarded about submissions. He fought Joe Stevenson, who is good for not much besides guillotines, and I honestly thought Guillard was trying to get submitted, Stevenson kept trying for the choke and missing, and Guillard just kept willfully stuffing his head back into Joe's armpit. I know it looks fixed, but Melvin is just that dumb.

Melvin was hand picked to give Diaz a win. His submission defense is ridiculously poor, and he never thinks in his fights. He took the bait, and was submitted.

This should have given other fighters confidence against Nate though, as his head was nearly taken off several times. Solid boxing and an avoidance of the ground, and you can take him out, no matter how much Leites... er... I mean, Diaz whines no one will "fight" him.

Nice pay day for Lil' Heathen for opening up a cut. Nasty gash on Buchholz!
