I think Houston Alexander looked impressive against Sherman Pendergarst. I know he wasn't fighting great competition, but he showed patience in this fight, powerful leg kicks, good take down defense against a larger guy, and he showed us that strong finishing ability that he has still exists. He just needs to work on his ground game.
That is the very definition of a tune-up fight. I don't think I'd get that excited tearing through a complete can. But it's good to see him get back in the win column.
Yeah I watched it last night, it was kind of neat to see Houston tear someone up like that again but as Simmi said, this was very much a tune-up fight.
He was a tune up fight, but you should look at it in a different way. Houston showed improved take down defense against a larger guy that happened to be a ground fighter. He defended not one, but two take downs and was unable to be taken down in general. I think that shows some improvement.
I'm still waiting for the video to load but I've always liked Houston, no matter the fun I poke at him on frequent occasion. I would never pick a fight with this guy, dude doesn't have wrists. His arms just go straight into his fists. Plus he runs on pure adrenalin. He's just a scary person, but he's all heart.
I can't have anything but respect for a guy who raises all of his children alone and has even transplanted a kidney to his daughter. Dude has an amazing story and I'm glad to see him making money and getting W's whenever he can. I always feel a little sad when I see him lose.
After Watching: Houston looked pretty good, mostly due to Sherman looking bad. Brutal leg kicks followed by brutal knees. Nice showing by Houston. The takedown defense looked pretty solid but he didn't really put a nice sprawl down. Hopefully Houston has trained his ground game before his UFC return.
I was not only impressed that houston showed a lot of patience, but also that he was showing patience against a dude that was on a five fight skid. He probably knew that he could go knock this clowns head off in about ten seconds, but he had a gameplan and stuck to it. I know the opponent was garbage, but alexander showed some maturity as a fighter.
Hard to believe Sherman was 8-3 when he made his UFC debut.
He's 3-12 (!) since then. Damn.
