Ranking the UFC divisions

Hey folks,

I was just thinking...is it just me or are we experiencing a changing of the guard in the UFC? For years everyone made fun of the heavyweights and the middleweights as terrible divisions, but I'm seeing a change. The LHWs seem to be aging, the HW are becoming more athletic and the middleweights are becoming really talented.

A year ago I would've ranked the divisions....

1. Light heavyweight
2. Lightweight
3. Welterweight
4. Middleweight
5. Heavyweight

Now I see it as this:

1. Lightweight -- Frank Edgar is 10-1 and hasn't sniffed a title shot; this division is talent-rich)

2. Middleweight -- Suddenly we have Hendo, Marquardt, Maia, Belfort, Wandy, Anderson Silva, Sexyama...this division is on the rise.

3. Light heavyweight -- Still high on talent but we're not seeing many young starts emerge, though Thiago Silva rebounded and Luis Cane looks good. Long live Machida.

4. Heavyweight -- too early? Lesnar/Carwin/Velazquez/Big Nog, risers like Duffee, Buentello back, Rothwell, Kongo, Mir...seems like the division is getting better

5. Welterweight -- like MW a year ago, the gap between GSP and the rest is huge. Condit is good but lost to Kampmann. Kampmann is good but lost to Daley. Fitch beat Alves, who beat Koscheck, who lost to Thiago, who lost to Fitch...argh! No one seems ready to challenge GSP.

Thoughts? Agree/Disagree?

Well I agree that the UFC is most certainly growing and slowly compiling more and more high quality fighters and stacked divisions, a trend I hope will continue. But I still think that the HW and WW divisions are a little lacking right now, and we could always do with a few more fighters who really chalange the title holders.

Still a great division but it's getting old...and name power doesn't equate to talent. Liddell is finished.

I would still put the heavyweight division last. It has gotten a lot better, but it is full of young unproven talent.

The light heavyweight division has some upcoming talent like Jon Jones and Ryan Bader who both have a lot of potential in my opinion. It's still a very stacked division even though not many new faces have come along. I think Jones and Bader could really go somewhere in a few years.

Good thread, and I enjoyed reading your opinions as to why each division is in its respective place, in your mind. However, let's take a look at something; particularly the LHW division in relation to the others.

It's been like ... over a year since the LHW belt has been successfully defended, with each champion looking to have more promise than the previous. From Rampage to Forrest, to Rashad, then onto Lyoto, and now Lyoto's fighting a highly game Shogun, who could very possibly take the title from him. There isn't any other division in the UFC where two undefeated guys with wins over top opponents have competed for the belt before. I think the state of the LHW title makes it clear that LHW is still the #1 division, as far as competition goes. GSP or Silva really have nothing left at MW except for rematches or people who just aren't ready for them yet.

I'd put Lightweight in second, simply because like you said, there are plenty of challenges at LW, however none which I believe will be able to beat Penn, which is why I rank LW second as opposed to first.

Well I don't know about that since Liddell retired, Rampage moved towards acting, and Evans might go down to Middleweight so...

They're losing the star talent..

I like the HW division. I like the situation. You got a beast for a champion. A lot of young guys working up the rankings to be excited about. The HW division will be the best division in MMA in a couple years.. by far. You're going to see beasts coming in. Hugely anticipated bouts. I like watching it evolve to be quite honest. But I guess this is from a different viewpoint. In depends what you like most about MMA.
