Lyoto Machida: "I made Rashad's small mistake a huge mistake."

haha, ya Machida took Rashad's mistake and knocked him clean out. i LOVE shogun but i hope he somewhat stays less aggressive b/c machida will catch him again i think.

i'm not a huge fan of machida nor a casual fan but you can't deny his defensive skills.

Lyoto Machida is coming off of the biggest victory of his career over former light-heavyweight champion Rashad Evans. Machida KO-ed Evans in the second round to earn himself the UFC light-heavyweight belt. Machida weighs in about it:

"I had a lot of pressure on me because I was getting closer to my dream," Machida said. "A lot of psychological pressure. I had several plans for Rashad. I had a plan A, B and a plan C. I was very confident. I was so focused on Rashad's mistakes, I made his small mistake a huge mistake. I took advantage of that."

Machida's first title defense will come against former PRIDE tournament champion Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Rua is also coming off of an impressive knockout victory where he put Chuck Liddell to rest in the first round at UFC 97. Shogun had been plagued by injuries prior to the Liddell fight and it now appears as if those injuries are no longer an issue. Machida expects Shogun to come forward and engage first, which plays right into his defensive fighting style.

"Shogun is a very aggressive fighter," said Machida. "His fighting style fits MMA really well. He's good on the ground and striking. He mixes it together really well so this makes him a very good fighter. I have experience with these kind of fighters. He's going to attack and I'm a defender so this will be good for me. The more he comes in and attacks, that's when I feel there are more openings. I'll be able to see his timing when he starts attacking. Once I find that, then I can execute my game plan."
Machida really fancies himself doesn't he? It would be interesting to see how he deals with a loss if it ever comes. Cant see it any time soon though...

IMO it's the Japanese mindset. They are very straightforward and don't tend to sugarcoat things.

I didn't see anything in that interview that made me think he is vainglorious or deluded about his own skills/ability.

Also, his english is terrible so this interview was probably translated from Portuguese and like Anderson, I think the simplification of his comments during the translation process makes him seem more blunt than he really intends to be.

Everybody good, plenty of slaves for my robot colony?

Yeah I saw that on the UFC website on a video promoting the next fight. When I heard him say he made Rashad's small mistakes into bigs ones I thought to myself, "He sure did!"

I also hope Shogun doesn't go in all crazy like because Machida will capitalize on it.

As much as I like Machida, I want to see how he does againist Shogun, because I've never been Shoguns biggest fan but I respect his fighting style and abilities.

This will truely be a great fight and hope it doesn't end right away because I'd love to see how each of them deal with the other persons style/game plan.

1. BJ "The Prodigy" Penn
2. Dan "Hollywood" Henderson
3. George "Rush" St Pierre

Rashad's footwork is a mess. If he continues to fight the way he does, then there is no way he'll beat Machida. I don't think Shogun stands much of a chance either, but I'll reserve my judgment until I make my picks. He'll probably lose though.

Machida has a list of plans for Shogun on the 24th.

Preferably T, K, O or U, D.
