Mir Picks Carwin in Lesnar fight

Frank Mir made it clear that he is set on breaking the 1-1 deadlock he has with UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar Friday during a Q and A session for fans after the WEC weigh-ins in San Antonio, Texas.

However, the former UFC heavyweight champion said he believed the pair wouldn’t be fighting for the belt should their third encounter happen in the near future. Mir told the crowd that he felt Shane Carwin would defeat Lesnar in their main event bout at UFC 106 on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas. Noting Carwin’s strength, Mir stated that he did not believe Lesnar would be able to bully Carwin the way he did to him at UFC 100 last July.

When asked if he had spoken with Lesnar since the bout and their post-fight altercation, Mir said he had not, but that he was still planning on it.

“If I do what I have to do, I will get locked in the cage with him again and we will discuss it then,” said Mir, who is slated to face Cheick Kongo at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 in Memphis.

Mir declined to answer whether he was suffering from a knee injury during his loss to the brutish 2000 NCAA Div. I wrestling champion, which had postponed the bout by two-and-a-half months. He made it clear he was not going to walk down the same path he felt Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira took after losing to Mir.

Finally, Mir touched on his interest in fighting middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who reportedly named Mir his choice candidate at heavyweight last August. In an exclusive interview with Sherdog.com shortly after, Mir said he’d “rip (Silva’s) shoulder out of the socket.”

“I would be extremely interested in that fight,” said Mir Friday. “I have learned that size helps people win fights. It would be a bad night for him if we end up grappling. He should keep doing a few exhibitions at light heavyweight and stay at middleweight.”

For Christ sakes, we've seen Carwin fight once, and the guy is God. Secondly, Mir has clearly lost it thinking he'd even last a round against Anderson, weight advantage or not.

Mir is not assessing a possible fight with Anderson properly . . .. To bully someone using simply power/strength, wrestling lends itself to that very well, being able to take someone down and doing damage. The approach Lesnar took to Mir, and Hughes used to do, as well as SEan Sherk. Of course power and strength is not a bad thing to have anywhere, but I think it is most advantagous in ground and pound, and in the clinch . . ..

Silva has more skill in the clinch, and Mir isn't famous for his takedowns. Plus, Anderson has a speed and accuracy advantage on the feet, which I believe can mostly negate Mir's "strength" advantage. Anderson isn't really known for his takedown defense, but Mir thinking he could get past Anderson's striking or just eat one on the way in to accomplish a takedown could end bad for him.

I hope we get to start hearing some more pro picks soon. I want to know what other fighters think about this matchup. But I think Mir may be right that Carwin could take this but I find his assessment of a Silva fight to be very wrong. I don't see him winning that at all.

Wait, so you mean Frank Mir is saying he didn't lose to the best guy in the UFC and there's someone even better than Brock?

Let's also take Mir's BJJ and Carwin's knock out power, we may aswell take Lyoto Machida's striking while we're at it.

You obviously dont get it. Carwin is every bit as strong if not stronger than lesnar, therefore he nullifies his strength advantage.

Lesnar has been much stronger than everyone else he has fought.

Whether he is as strong remains to be seen. You can't just take an attribute from someone, it's not really possible. Nullifying it is not taking it away, it's only nullified for as long as Carwin can counter it with his strength until he probably gasses in the second. Lesnar is also probably stronger than Carwin anyway.
