Once you start, that's it! If you think he should pay this much you're insane. It's like rookies that come into a sport. They stack themselves up against other athletes and compare money. Henderson is not the best pound for pound or the biggest draw, so the next guy who's better will get even more and so on and so on. A snowball I'm sure the UFC is holding back as we speak but this snowball with burst open the door for the rest of them. The only leverage UFC has is that they are the UFC and can pay more than the other Orgs.

Ugh, why is Dan being stupid? He is already very well paid. Does anyone really think that any MMA org right now would pay that sort of money for him?

I call bullshit. He's trying to put a spin on things.

Either way, I support Dan Henderson wanting to get paid big money, opposed to Dana White making big money of off him.

You don't think him getting paid ~300k + sponsors each fight is fair?

He's not a big draw, he shouldn't be paid like one. He wouldn't even be a title holder by the end of his contract.

It's not like the dude has a pension plan or free training. He's pushing 40, I'm not going to go on the internet and tell a fighter with a family not to make the most money he can in the 2-3 fights he has left. Dan Henderson's paid his dues and he's a legit second-tier draw. Henderson/Silva 2 does bigger money than Marquadt or Belfort

A pension plan? Please, his retirement funds are probably 50x greater than your average Joe (not to mention retiring at ~40 compared to most people who retire at 50+). Free training? He owns Team Quest, he can train there whenever he wants, and he's got some solid business there for when he retires. If you don't have a problem with him asking for that sort of money, why stop at a million? Hell, since he "has a family" he might as well ask for 30 million a fight and that'd be fine by your books.

Assuming this is true, and not a misrepresentation, Dan has lost his damn mind. He is not a big enough draw to warrant $1 million for signing. He simply isn't. Brock, Chuck, Tito, Hughes, Randy... They could pull that number. Hendo simply can't.

I bet the conversation went something like this:

'I want a shot at AS for the belt'
'Not gonna happen until you beat Marquardt and after the Vitor fight'
'So you want me to keep beating your pretty boys?'
'Kind of the gameplan'
'Fine, then give me $1M and I'll do it'

The reality is that Hendo is similiar to Couture in the fact that they are both thinking about the road ahead, do they want to coach full time, just retire, or what. At this point they don't want to just fight any Joe Blow, they want legit competition, and if you are going to give them fodder then they know they are just being used for their name and they want a paycheck for it. Hendo against Bisping was a joke, you have an olympian and world wide known MMA fighter against a TUF fighter who had to drop a weight class just to be able to compete on an average level. They sold that fight on Hendo's name and on a 'rivalry'.

Does Hendo deserve a $1M contract? No, but if they aren't going to give him interesting fights that he wants and just want to use his name to sell PPV's then yes, he does deserve the cash.

For the record, I am not saying Hendo is the most popular fighter, or anything like that. All I am stating is right now the UFC seems to be trying to build other fighers on his name, if so then he deserves a bigger paycheck because they are not giving him the chance to build his name, or redeem his losses.

I may be wrong here, but it wasn't a $1M contract, it was a million for just signing. Speculation only, he probably was looking at a four to six fight contract which would be an addtional $175K to $250K per fight. So he was looking to get around a half a mil per fight. Can't blame the guy for trying. Its safe to say that Strikeforce is not gonna put up the money, so negotiations will continue with UFC once the two sides have had an opportunity to counter offer. Again, only speculation, but Dana White saying the talks are over could simply translate into, "You are out of your effin mind if you think you gonna get that kinda effin money!!!" And if you think about it, he's real close to it anyway if he can perform like he did against Bisping. You gotta earn it in the UFC Dano, you know this.
