Dan Henderson Wants $1,000,000+

If you have been following Dan Henderson’s contract negotiations with the UFC over the past week like we have, you know that it has been a wild rollercoaster ride. On Monday, we posted what we hoped would be the final update on the Henderson negotiations, but we were wrong again. On Saturday, Dana White update Raw Vegas on what is going on with Dan Henderson:

“You never know what’s going to happen, we’ll see what happens in time. But as of right now, yeah, negotiations are done. I have a great relationship with him but he was looking for an obscene amount of money.”

And from MMAjunkie today:

“We’re at a stalemate right now. The money that [Henderson] is asking for would make him by far the highest-paid guy in the UFC.”

When I first heard this, I though Dana was over exaggerating about how much money Henderson was probably asking for. I wasn’t even going to report it because it was just Dana being Dana. Seriously, if you look at how much money he made after his last fight at UFC 100 ($100,000 salary, $150,000 win bonus & $100,000 knockout bonus) doubling or ever tripling it doesn’t sounds too obscene.

Well, apparently Dana White wasn’t exaggerating according to a report on Insidefights.com:

InsideFights.com has also learned that Henderson and the UFC are “far apart” on contract negotiations. Henderson is asking for a contract that will make him one of the highest-paid fighters on the roster, and the UFC offer is said to be considerably lower. The key sticking point in the negotiations has been Henderson’s request for a seven-figure signing bonus.

Hendo wanted a million plus just for resigning with the UFC. Dana White and the Fertitta brothers are doing well, but not that well. The UFC isn’t as big as the NFL (yet). No offense to Henderson, but he is not selling pay per views. He is one of my favorite fighters to watch fight, but I am not going to shell of $44.95 if he is the only name on the card (actually, I probably would). After seeing how fast Henderson and his people squashed the “signing with Strikeforce” rumors, I think Hendo will be asking for a lesser amount when he sits down with Dana again. - mmaposers.com
The man has a weird view on how much he is worth... does anyone think Dana should pay him that much?

He should try and get as much money as he can. Anybody that knows anything about negotiations knows that when you ask for a number you will really settle for a lower number, that is more than the number that is being offered.

He probably doesn't realistically think he can get that much, least I hope not. I think he's doing it to raise the bar for negotiations. If he asks for a million then there's a good chance Dana will offer him less than that, but still more than he would get if he left it up to Dana to begin with. I worded that wierd but I think you get the idea.

I dont think he should get what he wants but i do think he should get a considerable raise because the ultimate fighter season 9 and ufc 100 ko of Bisping have made him far more popular and capable of selling ppv. Not counting ko bonuses he made 250k against Bisping and I think a fight would Marquardt should get him more than that (maybe 400k or so if he wins) and then if all goes according to Hendo's plan and Silva/Henderson II does well he should get a very big payday.

HW-Brock Lesnar
LHW-Forrest Griffin, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans & Gegard Mousasi
MW-Chael Sonnen
WW-All hail GSP
LW-Frankie Edgar
FW-Kenny Florian & Mark Hominick
BW-Don't really have one but I love their fights

Simply all ufc guys or mma guys in general are way under paid. Even the superstars are underpaid its a joke. Some guys are lucky if they clear 10,000 after a fight. What a fn joke.

I suspect there may be more to it, Dans not crazy( I dont think).
Probably something like X number of fights over X amount of time for 1,000,000.plus win bonus, but who really knows.

I think the two sides will come to an agreement. One thing I have learned from this though-- Hendo's perception of his value to the UFC is not realistic. Hendo does not put the asses in the seat like the big name fighters do, he will never be huge draw like an Anderson Silva or even a Brock Lessner.

I think Hendo would be happy with what he is getting now +title shot at Silva (or atleast Machida/Shogun) next. To me it seems that he is busting Dana's balls right now because he got screwed over that title shot, and rightfully so.
Also 1m re-signing bonus on top of the money/fight he was getting earlier isn't that crazy. Ufc did a tuf season with him recently and he KTFO Bisping who is pretty huge name for more casual fans. Having him co-main couple weaker cards will regain that spent 1m pretty quick and Dana knows it.
Basically I don't see Dana letting him go to Strikeforce after building up his name so much for casual & new fans with TUF season. Dana will either suck it up and give Hendo that title shot or pays him well for that waste-of-time -fight against Nate first.
