The way he threw a man thats 280 pounds around and that fighter being no slouch either is damn impressive. Cain looks to have an amazing cardio/work ethic, great wrestling, good recover ability and decent standup. I know you guys are saying Brock will eat him alive and that "might" be true BUT if Cain doesnt go for the Title Shot then WTF is he doing in that division. Obviously he wants the title and it sucks that he has to go through Brock to get it but i think he has the best chance in the HeavyWeight Divison to make it happen. I think he would beat Nog by a decision and i think he would beat Mir in the first Round.
Yeah he just dominated that that fight. Some say it was a bad call from the ref to end it that quick, but its not like it would have made a difference other than leaving Cain's opponent with more bruises on his face lol.
Good call, and thank you for having a non Shogun/Machida post.
I have to respectfully disagree though... Cain looked awesome, but I thought Yushin Okami was going to run Sonnen out of the UFC after mopping the mat with him. I give the most impressive award to Chael, followed closely by Cain.
I disagree, I honestly think Chael Sonnen was the most impressive fighter tonight. Velasquez proved tonight he can wrestle, yeah it was impressive but we already knew he could wrestle, he never proved he can do any damage and never proved he could take a shot so he didn't answer the two big questions around him. Sonnen on the other hand took the fight to a guy many considered one of the top MW's in the UFC and he did it as a fairly substantial underdog.
Sonnen did what I expected he would do, but it was so much more impressive to watch him do it to a strong guy like Yushin Okami.
Cane proved he could take a shot in his last fight against Kongo. Yes, he got dropped but those were knockout blows to 9 out of 10 fighters in the division. Not only did he take them and not go out, he finished the takedown (which isn't too impressive against Kongo but still) He pretty much took the fight to Big Ben and managed to bully him around. Either Rothwell was overrated or Cain is just that damn good. I tend to believe both slightly but I lean toward the former more.
I do agree that Sonnen was more impressive though. If the Cain fight would have gone on longer we might have seen a legit stoppage of Big Ben, instead of a "meh" one.
also, it's just one of those things, and you hinted about it, say Cain can beat a bunch of the guys in the heavyweight division, will he ever be champ with Brock around, because to me, Cain seems exactly the same as Brock just smaller, so how would he beat him, because i really doubt he is going to throw brock around like he did with the last couple guys. Every weight class has a guy like him ya know, the roger huertas, nate marquardt, hell might even through jon fitch in there even though i really like him, they are awesome fighters, but not gonna be the chapms of their respective weight class
I don't like the way Cain was bloking shot with his face at the beginning of round 1. It reminds me of the fight against Kongo. I'm afraid he might get KOed easily if a powerful striker like Carwin of Lesnar hit that target.
It looks like Cain has found a gameplan he's comfortable with(particularly after a few scary moments in the Kongo fight) and he plans on sticking to it until it's rendered ineffective. The less variety in terms of technique we see from him, the more likely future opponents will underestimate the other tools at Cain's disposal.
At least he's not content to lay-n-pray. He just keeps on hitting no matter the position.:thumb02:
I agree that Cain was very impressive, the way he controlled a much heavier man was very nice (Rothwell cuts about 20 pounds to make 265!). But he seems to lack the punching power to put away guys, I mean I know he won by TKO but Rothwell wasn't exactly rocked at many points in the fight. It's a good thing he has a good chin.
it helped he was fighting "big lazy" but was impressive. Unfortunately he is small for a heavyweight compared to Brock, Cain, etc and has ww power...shoot Ben who is not noted for his chin took like 7,542 punches and was getting up whenthe fight was stopped.
I'd say Ben Rothwell's chin is actually pretty darn good, he took a ton of hard punches from Arlovski before he was put away with a brutal right hand. The combos that Arlovski hit him with at the end of the 2nd round would've dropped most fighters on their butts, but Rothwell survived and made it to the 3rd round.
recovery does not = chin, having a good chin is somebody like Patrick Cote who has never been dropped by a punch in his entire career. Velasquez may have shown good recovery but come on do you honestly believe Kongo managed to hit Cain with the perfect shot 4 times when he only threw 6 I mean come on if Kongo could throw with that kind of power that consistently he would have ran through the entire HW division by now.
Whether it was a premature stoppage or not Cain was dominating this fight badly. Rothwell has one hell of a chin I will say that but really isnt that great of a fighter or in Cains league for that matter. I had both those rounds being 10-8 so i dont really care if they stopped it early. No chance Rothwell was going to win this fight fighting like that.
How is Cain's chin in question? I don't get that... he took massive hits from Kongo and survived and won? Maybe I'm confused here from half-reading this thread.
People are debating because people have their own definition of what "chin" means, some people think it means the ability to take a shot and not get dropped or rocked by it ala Cabbage, and others think it means having great recovery after getting rocked ala Noguiera. Cain got dropped and rocked badly by Kongo some people say that's a great "chin" (I disagree) and others would classify that as not necessarily having a great "chin" but having alot of "heart".
Cane looked good, but Rothwell looked really poor and a C level fighter. The stoppage was a bit early but he was getting dominated, I think Cane needs to improve his power though, put on a bit more muscle mass.
Cain looked very impressive but it was always gonna come down to wrestling.
Sonnen's domination of Okami was unexpected and really impressed me, but I just can't get excited about Sonnen for some reason...
For me, I was most impressed by Barry, I mean in no way did he dominate like Chael or Cain but it was just the way he switched it on after taking an eye poke and a bit of a beating. Wasn't on the main card but I was impressed.
