The pros and cons of an MMA monopoly by one association

In short - fans win (we get the fights we want), fighters lose (money and bargaining ability).

What I am getting at is when the UFC bought Pride, I think we all thought, finally, the best will be fighting the best. Now with Strikeforce/Affliction, etc, there is a division again and if fighters are not happy in one place they hop to another. I hope and pray that we do not get into a boxing scenario with an alphabet soup of champions.

Are we living in the dwindling golden age of MMA? Will the fights we really want to see never happen, or happen well past their best before date. What is the solution to this? Could there be an over site committee ensuring the best fighters meeting in a timely fashion? Is it possible?

I truly feel that something needs to be done fast to keep each new association that pops up from veering off the path and claiming that they have the true champion in each division.

Thoughts?

Disagree. Also remember that Affliction is done.

Competition is EXTREMELY important. If the UFC was the only one, we might maybe get to see some uninhibited fights. But, I'm sure we'll pay out the ass for them and there won't be much pressure for the UFC to deliver.

This huge free card was a big incentive. It's possibly a reason Couture/Vera is free and the definite reason for UFC "Main Events" that counter programmed it.

I think that co-promotion is a good idea occasionally. Maybe get the UFC and Strikeforce to put on a fight once a year for the fans. It could have Fedor v Lesnar, Rogers vs JDS, Mir vs Werdum, Mousasi vs Machida, Hendo vs Silva II, Mayhem vs Alves, Shields vs Fitch...

For cliffs: Competition is really important, in the long run and the short run. In the shortrun, we have two companies trying to outdo eachother in production value and fighter quality.

In the longrun we have more fighters able to fight routinely enough to be professionals = more quality. And with competition comes more competitive pay, which is incentive for higher quality athletes to go to MMA.

Fans win? In a monopoly, we have the stfu and follow the UFC, they have the power as the big number 1, they do listen to the fans obviously but aren't swayed greatly by the voices of the fans.

This is a great topic. The divisions are over. Strikeforce may be around for a while. UFC will unify the MMA scene sooner than later. Dream should be the counterpart overseas as it really doesn't pose too big of a challenge. However in most business there is a one and two. IBM (hardware) vs Microsoft (software) at one point, Coca Cola vs Pepsi which is probably a better example, McDonalds vs every other fast food franchise. Clearly the UFC is at the top. Unlike his predecessors (Elite/Bodog) Scott Coker has a solid reputation within MMA circles as a promoter and business man that's why his organization has flourished. They stayed out of the behemoth's way up until now...

For those of you who don't know why they made a move to CBS for a paltry deal. It's for them to garner larger sponsors. The UFC has a substantial following therefore they run PPVs which they keep the profits and do free shows at will. CBS reaches a wider demographic, but not sure it's a good idea allowing kids to watch this even though I did back in the 90's...lolz! Plus there's no revenue.

Wages will be a lot higher with the UFC. It's already becoming the NBA or NFL of MMA with major sponsors. First they need to get New York and key states then get it sanctioned in the Olympics. Crazy thing is this sport is going to create a Spartan like army of our generation.

Wonder how it's going to be like in another 10-20+ years.

We aren't tied down and forced to watch MMA. The UFC will put on quality fights because that's how they make their money...through the fans.

Yah it all falls on the management. If you had Elite it would be like boxing; corrupt. Those guys were terrible for the sport. The UFC has the right business model.

Think it's an interesting point to have second tiered organizations to give B class fighters a platform to perform and secondly for A class fighters to negotiate. Then we have the situation with Hendo, Mousasi, and Fedor now. Perhaps it would be inevitable to have ONE organization then there's no options. That's when we the fans win I suppose.

True but if we want to watch MMA then UFC is the most obviously to the general fan as it is the biggest most well known.

Of course they have to put on quality fights but as a monoply it means they can do what they want rather then what the fans want more but obviously they are not going to want to put on boring fights because they can.

I like it as a monopoly. I want all the best fighters in 1 organization. I don't like that Henderson might leave and Fedor is in Strikeforce. Imagine if in the NFL the AFC and NFC were separate. That would suck.

Competition is important in the beginning of a sport for incentive and to ensure fair pay/treatment of fighters. After a sport has been well established it is better off to see one league (or in this case promotion) take over so that all the best competitors are under one roof. All the major North American sports have followed this pattern. No one complains about there being no competition for the NFL. The key is that there was competition at one time.

MMA is still in its infancy as a sport (less than 20 years, that is nothing) so it is still shaking things out. Ultimately I hope we'll see just one organization so that there are no issues with getting the best to fight each other. Whether it is the UFC or not doesn't matter, although they have a big head start.

The NFL, NBA, and NHL are all monopolized. The MLS is one association. All of the major organizations are ran by one group. It works out great for them, I don't see why it wouldn't with the UFC.
