So ...

what happens if Serra pulls off an upset and beats St. Pierre?

I think almost everyone believes that St. Pierre will just walk through Serra, but anything can happen in the octagon. A lot of crazy things have happened in the octagon and it is ignorant to believe that Serra stands no chance against St. Pierre. It is improbable, but not impossible.

Discuss.

I was thinking about this today...it could happen, he could land something lucky, GSP could slip, etc. We all know what should happen but the reality is that any fighter at this level has the potential to win.

*shudders with disgust*

If it happens I'll literally shit my pants

I think it will be great if Serra wins the title. It will add a lot more interest into the Welter Weight Divison and create that anyone can win at any time feel for the PPVs whixh should of course make them much more exciting for the fans.

Plus of course he will bring the title back to the U.S. which is also a plus.

Dana white is not a stupid man. NOTHING happens if Serra wins the title...that just means serra loses the title to Diego, and then Dana gets all these great matchups between GSP/Hughes/Koscheck/Diego/BJ penn(If he's WW)/Jon fitch etc...So basically exactly the same thing happens except Dana gets more leverage when negotiating the $$$ in the contract.

So, as far as the UFC is concerned, a freak loss would probably be good. I think GSP wins literally 91% of the time though.

My Top 5

(0. Fedor)
1. Cro Cop
2. GSP
3. Mauricio RuA
4. Quinton Jackson
5. BJ Penn

Will you just killed your arguement since if he were to beat St. Pierre he would prove himself to be a quality fighter.

I like excitment in my fights. Its not as fun if you know who is going to win each fight.

And yes I would like the belt to come to the US just as mush as Canadian fans wanted it to go to Canada.

Pogo, your logic is 100% wrong. Serra beating GSP does not make Serra a quality fighter. Did Coleman's win over Shogun mean Coleman was still a quality fighter? Was Fedor's loss due to a cut proof that the other person was the same caliber fighter?

Serra proving he's that quality fighter and him beating GSP are two very different things. I beleive there is next to 0% chance of Serra proving he is that level of a fighter...but I think there is a 5-10% chance that Serra wins, do you see the distinction?

If Serra wins that means there will be serious climatic implications because hell actually froze over...

On a serious note, everyone always has a chance of winning however small. It is conceivable that GSP could slip, Serra mount him and land a quick elbow that would open up a bad cut or something. The odds of it actually happening have got to be something like 1000:1, but it's still possible. As for what it would mean? Besides a fatter paycheck and maybe more exposure for Serra... Nothing. Serra would just lose the title to his next opponent. You can't expect him to get lucky twice in a row. I'm not bashing Matt, he just has no business fighting at WW. He is way too small. His chance to win is to take his opponent to the ground and submit them. That just isn't going to happen against top-notch WWs like GSP, Hughes, Diego, etc...Those guys are too big and too good. In stand-up, everyone has a reach advantage over him and most have a skill advantage too. A guy like BJ Penn can defy his size and compete with and even beat the top WWs because he is just so naturally talented. Matt Serra cannot.

I like Matt Serra and I think he could conceivably hold a belt in the UFC, but not at WW. He has a much better chance at LW.

Edit: JWang I agree that Fedor's "loss" to TK meant nothing. I don't even recognize it as a true loss. It was an illegal strike.
