Guy Mezger's Illness?
Does anyone know the story of Guy Mezger's illness?
He was supposed to fight Tito Ortiz at UFC 50 but had to upll out because of an illness/injury. It was supposed to be career threatening.
Does anyone know his current status? Thanks!

Guy suffered 2 strokes.
He's doing pretty well, but he won't be fighting anymore.

Mezger has always been a well rounded fighter. I was watching his fight with Rogerio Nogueira the other day, and he does a really good job neutralizing Rogerio on the ground. Nogueira would take Mezger down, and Mezger would pop right back up. Not the most exciting fight to watch, but it showed that Mezger can hang with really good fighters. Hell, IMO he beat Arona as well, and he clearly beat Sakuraba(Back when Saku was in his glory).

Man a stroke. Thats really awful. He was still a very young guy as well. Like early/mid 30s. Do you know if it was related to his fighting career?
Thats another Lions Den fighter down.
Thanks for the info and a Merry Christmas.

yea that sucked....I remember leading up to UFC 50 I couldn't wait. I my mind Mezger was always an underatted fighter and really progressed as he got older a lot more than some guys. The Mezger that lost to Ortiz in 99' was a whole diff. fighter than the Mezger we saw fight Silva and Liddell. I think if he had ended up fighting Tito in 04' he would have KO'd him or beaten him down if he could keep the fight off the ground. Def. one of the best fighters to ever come out of the Lion's Den next to Ken and Frank.

Mezger says it was the Vioxx that caused him to have a stroke.
Other rumors are steroid use, and head trauma(From getting KO'd, and taking shots).
Oh yea, the Mezger that fought Tito the second time was definitely not the same Mezger who fought Arona, Rogerio, & even Liddell.

Really? What's the story behind that shit?
Mezger is awesome. That's about all I gotta say. Underrated as hell and fought some tough guys. He was beating the shit out of Wandy until he got KOed haha. Too bad about those strokes that sucks.
