Is it just me or has anyone else fallen out of love with the UFC lately? I don't know if it's just a hangover from the Shogun decision or the lack of big name fights recently, but I seem to be the least interested in it I've been for quite some time. And it's not that I'm not pumped about MMA as a whole, I was more excited for WEC 44 and Strikeforce than the last 2 ufcs of the next 2 (aside from the Penn fight). I'm sure it's jus a slump, but anyone else feeling this?
I've been in a slump for a while now. I haven't gone out of my way to see the PPV's, and when I watch the fights later or read about them, it appears I'm not missing much.
I've always wanted more fights then 1 ppv / mo., but there is sucha thing as too much of a good thing. We've been flooded with PPV's and free events and TUF and WEC and Saturday Night Fights, all in one month, and all at 3+ hours a pop.
Add the stresses of the economy and the upcoming holidays, and it's been a little much. I'd say we're just burned out right now.
I thought I was the only one but feel exactly like the OP and it started after the Shogun fight too. That decision left a real bad taste in my mouth. Anyways, I've purchased pretty much all the PPVs for the last three years but I haven't the last two. I know I'll come back next year I just need a break for now, the holidays are expensive too.
The Shogun vs. Machida fight was one of the greatest fights this year. I really enjoyed watching every second! I can only say Thank you UFC for putting up such an outstanding 5 Round battle.
the last UFC I "HAD" to see was UFC 100, though I am excited to see Penn's fight coming up. This past card (UFC 106) would have been an amazing card if not for Lesnar's medical issues and Karo's prescription pills issues. I would have "HAD" to see this last card had it not fallen apart.
This is the truth right here. Very stacked and exciting card.
I think it comes down to the main event for a lot of people when deciding to buy/watch a UFC. Vera/Couture and Tito/Forrest plain and simple are NOT main-event worthy fights.
Far from it. The recent events haven't been filled with big names, but they've still been entertaining. I've really enjoyed quite a few fights. The most notable ones over the past few months would probably be Machida vs Shogun, Swick vs Hardy, Bisping vs Kang, Pearson vs Riley, Franklin vs Belfort and Nogueira vs Couture. All very good fights.
November's highlight was Fedor vs Rogers. It overshadowed 105 and 106. UFC should come back with 107. MMA as whole was great this month. Dream and other MMA promotions have great fights worth watching too.
I'm more in love with the UFC and MMA than I ever have been at the moment. I just want to see fights and this is how many people feel. The UFC could hold out and do 8-10 events a year instead of the 15 they did this year and the cards would be more stacked but I like what they are doing at the moment. I don't care if I'm watching Tito vs. Forrest or GSP vs. Penn, I love watching MMA. Obviously you get more excited for some cards over others but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy every single one.
I'd hate for MMA to go the way of boxing and have two or three good fights a year. I want to see a big show every month, and then the events in the UK and Germany, etc and the Fight Nights dotted around the year.
Also, I loved the Machida vs. Shogun fight. I was on the edge of my seat for the full 25 minutes. Going into that fight I thought Machida was going to KO Shogun in the first few rounds, but as the fight progressed you got the feeling that Shogun was getting closer and closer to the upset. Then the final bell went, Buffer stepped up to announce the winner, and Machida's hand was raised much to the surprise of everyone. The crowd couldn't believe it, Shogun was devestated. Drama at its best. I can't wait for the rematch.
I scored it 3-2 to Shogun but I can see why people would score it for Machida so it wasn't crazy judging, but that's for another topic. I thought it was a great fight.
Wasn't excited about UFC 106....turned out to be one of the best shows of the year.
You don't need big name fights to put on great shows, and UFC 106 is proof of this.
I admit I'm a little harsh on cards that look lackluster, but I don't judge the final product until the show is completed. I mean trust me, I enjoy star studded cards as much as the next guy, but if you didn't like UFC 106 because it didn't have big named guys (barring the main event that is) and no title fight then you're not a MMA fan.
Same with UFC 105, which I actually think was a better and more entertaining card than 106. There was 1 slightly dull fight on the whole 105 main card (Couture vs Vera), but even that wasn't unwatchably dull. I still enjoyed the fight. Fights like Pearson-Riley, Wilks-Brown, Bisping-Kang and Hardy-Swick were excellent. The prelim fights that were shown were good as well, especially Andre Winner's KO win. Loved that card after expecting it to suck.
Don't worry the first break-up never takes... It seems like we are in a transition phase where the old guard is hanging on while the next generation is fighting for ME status.
I think everything is going fine. Injuries are the only reason for the slump, has nothing to do with the company.
Maybe you're starting to like MMA for different reasons than you initially did? I have no idea, but I don't see how it makes a huge difference who is fighting when you really think about it. It's the UFC, if they aren't contenders, then they are fighting to be contenders. Don't buy the PPV if you don't want to, there are still plenty of people who are.
So, man up, buy yourself some chocolate, some flowers, fire up the internet, and enjoy your UFC cost free until you "fall in love" again.
And SERIOUSLY.... 108 is trash????? Get a clue man! You've been around for awhile, you must not be serious.
No , its not just you. Ortiz vs Griffin 3. Do me a favour.
THe UFC needs better fighters,I believe they over - rate some of the established names and over use them. The sport is still in its infancy and they are still learning.
Nope. I love each and every UFC there is. There will always be at least one good knockout/fight/submission, and just because of one bad fight...doesn't mean I'll love any love for the sport that keeps my life going.
Yes, it is just you. The UFC is the premier organization in the world. You and anybodyelse that says they are more into WEC and Strikeforce are clearly not into the sport for talent. The UFC is the big leagues, it's where the BEST fighters in the world fight. WEC and Strikeforce, except for 1 or 2 people, is the minor leagues. As far as I'm concerned, those 1 or 2 in those organizations are still minor league level until they fight in the UFC. Regardless what you or anybody says, if you are looking for the best fighters having the best fights, UFC is where you go.
The fights are still very exciting, but it's almost like the UFC is a victim of it's own success. How do you keep topping the types of super high caliber fights and excitement you see in just about every card?
I mean, c'mon, people are calling GSP "boring" after he completely mauled Alves. No one talks about Marquardt even though he knocked out Maia, thought to be a top title fight prospect, in like five seconds. Jon "The Matrix" Jones can barely sniff a title shot; he might even be years off.
Next thing you know, Bruce Buffer will go from doing a Buffer 360 to levitating into the octagon, defying gravity and transmitting his thoughts directly into the brains of millions of fight fans through mental telepathy...
And we're going to ask the octagon girls to sport two pairs of titties apiece..
Let's just give thanks, man.
