UFC 108's Gabriel Gonzaga out of Junior Dos Santos fight due to staph

The UFC hasn't officially announced the change to the bout, which was part of the event's Jan. 2 pay-per-view main card and set to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

This the latest in a long string of injuries and illnesses that have plagued the UFC over the past few months. The Gonzaga vs. Dos Santos bout was a pivotal one for the UFC's heavyweight division, and the winner could have earned a title shot.

Gonzaga was returning to the cage for the first time since an August win over UFC newcomer Chris Tuchscherer. "Napao" cracked the UFC rookie with a low blow early in the fight, and Tuchscherer never full recovered. Regardless, Gonzaga had climbed back into title contention with a 3-1 record in his past four UFC contests and was looking for a win over one of the UFC's top prospects.

Dos Santos has quickly climbed up the ranks of the UFC's heavyweight division with three-straight stoppage wins in the organization. Just 25 years old, Dos Santos earned TKO wins over Fabricio Werdum and Stefan Struve before forcing Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic to verbally submit to strikes at a UFC 103 main-card contest in September.

UFC officials will likely keep Dos Santos on the card with a replacement fighter.

Todd Duffee would be a good stand in, if he's up for it. It would be a huge jump in competition though.

There isnt really anyone available worth fighting Dos Santos...

Take off Lesnar, Mir, Nog, Carwin, Valesquez, Kongo, Gonzaga, Cro Crop, Rothwell, Duffee.. Who else is there worthy of fighting JDS?

Id say pull Valesquez from the Nog fight set for Feb, have Valesquez v JDS as 108 and Carwin v Nog in Feb.

Wasn't Nog out with Staph again?

Cain vs Junior Dos Santos would make a definate number 1 contender.

Give him Ben Rothwell. Dude supposedly wasn't hurt in his last fight and wants to make a point that he belongs in the UFC. I think the management would be willing to give him that fight.

Cain Valasquez (sp is way off) is a good choice too. Buentello could fit but I'm not sure if he's a step up or down from Crocop, regardless of mindset. Carwin should be ready to fight but they may hold him off since Brock's health changes on a day to day basis (one day it was 2 months, then his career was in jeapordy, then it was 6 months, now he can return "soon" who the hell knows now)

At this point like 3/4 of the UFC's heavyweight division is either injured or wrapped up in fights. I believe we can call this the curse of Fedor. God is pissed, he really wanted to see Fedor vs Lesnar.
