Cain Velasquez v. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Moved To UFC 109

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion and mixed martial arts legend, Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira, is expected take on undefeated rising star Cain Velasquez at UFC 109, which is slated for Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Feb. 6, 2010.

Nogueira and and Velasquez were supposed to hook 'em up in the UFC 108 main event on Jan. 2, 2010; however; "Big Nog" came down with a serious case of staph infection, which forced him to withdraw from the bout.

That's pretty soon. I don't think Nog will be 100%, but... Nog via submission. :thumb02:

well at least this is something - looking forward to this fight. If Nog is cleared of his staph infection now I think he should show up in Feb very well

i like this matchup altho i dont think it's as safe for my boy Cain as a JDS one is, i think we will learn alot of Cain this fight and win or lose he will come out with a better understanding of what it takes to fight the true elite, where he stands and what it will take to keep on the journey, i look forward to it.

This is a bad match up for Cain he is going to have a REALLY hard time putting away Nog, sure he is good at overwhelming fighters but he doesn't have the KO power (well hasn't showed it anyways)

Unless Nog's chin is really not that good anymore. He did good against Randy but ya know. I hope his chin is good still and it was just a case of Staph/Mir's improved standup.

Somewhere down the line I do want to see a Mir Nog II.

A highly anticipated heavyweight matchup between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Cain Velasquez (7-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) may take place Down Under.

Despite reports circulating today that Nogueira and Velasquez will meet at UFC 109 in Las Vegas, MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has learned from sources close to the organization that the UFC is actually leaning toward booking the fight for UFC 110 in Australia.

Verbal agreements are in place for the contest, though bout agreements have not yet been finalized.

Nogueira and Velasquez were expected to meet in the main event of UFC 108 on Jan. 2, but a severe case of staph infection forced "Minotauro" out of the bout.

Nogueira has since undergone treatment for the infection and recently told MMAWeekly.com that he would be ready to fight in February and that he would love to fight in Australia.

"In February, I think Ill be in shape," Nogueira said. "I'd love to fight in Australia. If they put me on the card, I would love to fight there."

Prior to the cancellation of the Jan. 2 bout, UFC president Dana White announced that the winner of the contest would receive a heavyweight title shot.

"Nogueira vs. Velasquez is a great matchup between the present and the future of the heavyweight division," White stated. "Nogueira showed in the (Randy) Couture fight that he still has plenty left to offer at the top level of the game, and Velasquez was devastating in his win over Ben Rothwell, so with both guys in top form, we're definitely going to see a No. 1 contender emerge from this fight to take on the winner of the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin title fight."

Nogueira briefly held the UFC's interim heavyweight title, which he earned by defeating Tim Sylvia in February 2008. Nogueira's lone loss in the UFC came in his next bout, a TKO defeat to Frank Mir in December 2008. The former PRIDE champion bounced back with a win over Couture in the main event of UFC 102 in August.

Meanwhile, Velasquez has long been touted as one of the heavyweight division's most-promising prospects. The American Kickboxing Academy product has earned five-straight UFC wins since debuting in April 2008.

I still think they should try and get Velasquez to fight JDS at 108 instead, that card needs a top 10 HW to fight JDS in order to make it appealing.

I see Nog winning this no matter where the fight goes. Cain's top game isn't good enough to avoid Nog's epic sub game. Stand up wise, Nog definitely has the skills to hang with him until he wants to land the takedown. Either way, should be a good one.

Im a huge Cain fan, but I just dont think he brings anything to the table that Nog hasnt seen plenty of times before. Nog has decent takedown defense and had zero problems sweeping Randy in his last fight, who is similar in size to Cain with better wrestling and ten times more well rounded mma skills. Nog will probably finish him with a sub within two minutes of this hitting the mat.

in all honesty Randy hasnt shown any note worthy wrestling in his last 3 fights (Brock, Nog, Vera) and was handled pretty easily by all 3, getting stuffed and really not controlling the fight he has in days past. If you include his hiatus when he was in his contract dispute and we havent seen Randy put on a wrestling clinic in a few years tbh. I really think time has caught up with Randy and i think Cain right now has much better TDs and overall GnP. The stand up is gonna be the surprise trick up Cains sleeve, he can throw nice combos and ppl are sleeping on it, i look forward to him being more confidence with his combos, esp the high/low kick combos and really changing the way ppl view him. He is very young, very raw. But he has the tools. I dont know if this is his time yet and honestly i wouldnt be shocked if he lost to Minotauro BUT im confident Cain's time will come and he will open the flood gates for La Raza and just like boxing we will shine ;)

It could just be the calibre of competition. I guess we find out this fight:thumbsup:
