i dont think it should be mandatory, but definitly encouraged. especially if your at the elite level. you can tell the crowd loved it when anderson silva tried to speak alot of english at the ufc90 press conference. it helps connect him to the fans. same as american fighters when they go to other countries. if the ufc is gonna go international, say to mexcio which has been rumored, would it hurt to pick up a couple of phrases to let the people know you care.

Bit hard to add subtitles to live events. Agreed those would work on the DvDs though.

I think they should offer bonuses to foreign fighters who speak english however to tell them they must learn english is a bad idea. It will take away from their training and put a lot of added pressure on foreign fighters.

Sorry, this is arrogant bullsh*t. The 170+ million people in Brazil mostly speak Portuguese. A lot of top MMA fighters are Brazilian. Get over it. Not everyone should speak English because some American rednecks are uncomfortable with "foreigners."

It makes sense, but it is impractical in the application.

Remember a few months back I posted a suggestion that someone find and compile frequently used MMA-related terms and phrases in Portuguese, Russian, French and Japanese? A lengthy task, I realize, but anyone who attempted it would surely get repped like mad.

It seems very nationalistic and I don't like it. Who are we to say what language everyone should know?

how noble of you to volunteer the rest of the world to learn the language you are comfortable with. if you think a lack of language barriers would help the world, why aren't you jumping to learn the language used by the most people worldwide? not interested in mandarin chinese? yeah, it does sound inconvenient to have to learn someone else's language. ironic?

they are professional fighters. i choose my favorites from fight styles, attitude, and personality traits. spend the extra time in the gym rather than in a classroom. give me a break.

I can't believe that 15% of the members on an MMA forum would rather see a great speech than the best fighters of the world.

I'm sure Affliction and Dream are all for the UFC releasing all of their fighters who can't speak english though...
