Marcus Davis thought Ben Saunders 'was going to be a very easy fight' at UFC 106

The game plan originally was to jump right on him, to give him no room at all, get in his face and smother everything and overwhelm him with speed on the inside. But I wasn’t able to do that ... I’ve worked with guys that were 6-foot-3, 6-foot-4, but he just seemed much taller. I don’t know why, but his reach and his height just seemed to be much taller. To be honest, I thought it was going to be a very easy fight and I was completely wrong. That was shocking to me. I did think it was going to be easy because I felt as though I had enough experience and because he was so thin, it was going to be easy to overpower him. I don’t know what’s next. I have no idea. I don’t know what the UFC is going to do.
A dejected Marcus Davis reflects on his losing performance at the UFC 106 event from the Mandalay Bay Events Center on Nov. 21 in Las Vegas, which sent him tumbling down the list of eligible welterweight title contenders. "The Irish Hand Grenade" also came up short against Dan Hardy back at UFC 99 and may have trouble selling himself as a legitimate threat despite reinventing himself after a failed stint on The Ultimate fighter Season 2. Can the 36-year-old Davis make one last run with the big dogs in the 170-pound division? Or has the curtain begun to fall on the career of the former boxer?

What's next for the Irish hand grenade?

I don't think they will or should cut him but they don't really NEED him for UK shows. With Dan Hardy and all the TUF guys they got a good talent pool gathering.

After watching what Saunders did to Wolf with the clinch using his height and knees I don't know why Davis would look past him like that...

A very silly idea to think that anybody is going to be easy. Ben Saunders was swept aside by Mike Swick in his last fight but he still has that clinch and those deadly knees which can send you to sleep. And that's just what happened.

I don't know what to think of Marcus Davis. Before and after the Dan Hardy fight I thought he was a douche, then a week for the fight with Saunders I heard an interview with him on MMA Junkie Radio and he actually sounded like a pretty likeable guy. Then he says something like this after the fight.

He won't get cut. He is still exciting to watch even if he is coming off two losses. And isn't the UFC doing an event near his home town in 2010? He would be a big draw.

Why is he good for UK shows?

I have no idea why that comment was made - he's not even f**king Irish!

He has nothing to do with the UK at all. We have enough british fighters, just because Davis isn't a top american fighter he's trying to be a top UK fighter?

The guy wears a kilt (scottish) on the way to the ring. What a numpty

I like Davis - the dude always shows up ready to fight. I think that he'll bounce back from this fight a better fighter and won't overlook an opponent in the future. While his gameplan obviously didn't work out, I can see why he thought that way. What fighter doesn't think he can beat the other guy? Was he overconfident in how easy he thought the W would be? Yes. Hopefully he won't repeat that mistake.

Also, from a promoter stand point, I think that he is good for the UFN & UK shows. The guy has a name in the UK (at least it appears that way to me from the USA), because he can be the "bad guy" to the UK fighters. Who in the UK didn't want to see what Hardy was going to do to him?

I like the guy, and I think he's a great gatekeepr and/or exciting fighter to give the fans for a FOTN or KOOTN on a free card.

Man, how the hell do you overlook a guy like Saunders after what he did to Wolf? Also, how the hell is your gameplan for Saunders to "try and get inside"? Seriously? Dude's a Muay Thai fighter, that's exactly what he WANTS you to do... C'mon. I mean, I really like Marcus, but that's just horrid game planning and him over looking Ben was a massive mistake.
