I have almost all the released UFC events from the low 40s to mid 70s (and all but a few of the Prides, too ), but I stopped buying them around the time they went hi-def because I didn't want to end up buying two copies of the same event.

They've released a few collections and one event (100) on bluray, but so far, the UFC hasn't really started a day and date release schedule for Bluray alongside DVD. Back in July, they made it sound like they were committed to Bluray, but we're not really seeing that, yet.

So...What's the deal? Is no one buying the available Bluray releases? Is it costing more than they thought? Is everything on schedule, and I'm just impatient?

The deal is the Blu Rays are fairly low quality from what ive read. Not many extras on disc and only select fights are truly in high-def (this is mostly due to the age of many fights). Im looking forward to getting the 100 greatest fights as it's apparently the best looking UFC Blu-Ray and quite simply has a shit load of fights.

Ontop of that the market for Blu Rays is still relitively small. UFC is still relatively niche aswell so it makes sense they arent pum ping to many out at the moment though there has been like 3 releases in the past few months. i expect to see more full events released in high def throughout the coming year though so no need to worry.

Also I wouldnt bank on the older events you havent purchased being released on blu-ray. This again is due to the age of the images and the means that they were origionaly recorded by. You can't just suddenly make an image high def if its a crappy source image to start with. They tried to due this with the ultimate knockout's blu ray release and it got pretty bad reviews saying the image should barely be considered high def.

Newer fights however are being recorded with better technology allowing for a much better image. (owning a few HD fights on my Xbox 360 i can say there is a definite difference and it looks much better in HD) But you have to realise it's a very explosive sports which makes for alot of motion blurring and image tearing during many exchanges which does compromise the high defness of it all/ but it still looks damn good. Just not top notch.

UFC on VHS

TBH I kind of feel Blu Rays are still overpriced. I got a PS3 and a HDTV already but I only own 1 Blu Ray. Like he ^ said some of it is not really true D because of the age of the fights. So you could just buy the DVD version and it would almost be the same.

I would buy them if they made like

UFC 1-20 The Begining
UFC 20-40 The Dark Ages
UFC 40-60 A new Begining

Or whatever just 1 or 2 events is ok but I would rather have the best of an era with tons of extra interviews and stuff like that it would be cool in retrospect.

Is UFC Ultimate 100 Fights on Blu Ray kinda like that? Or is it just like what we saw on Spike.

Thanks for the well thought out response. A couple of things...
I understand that. I stopped purchasing new events when they started recording/broadcasting them in hi-def. Anything missing from my collection from before that just hasn't been purchased and/or released, yet.

The blurring is due to the high compression used in the Microsoft video codecs for Xbox. It isn't an issue for bluray, assuming the masterers know what they're doing.

Pretty much anything you download/stream over the internet is going to be compressed in a similar way, Xbox or not.

Sadly it is still an issue atleast according to reviewers of the Blu Ray's i cant say myself as i dont own one but if I get one soon ill let you know how they look. Definitly overpriced but as the market penetration grows the price will slowly drop.

Though ive got to say Monsters inc on my PS3's blue ray looks AMAZING!

I wonder if they backed off the Bluray market because Bluray hasn't taken off like they expected it to. This may be due largely to the decline in the economy, but that doesn't change the fact that bluray really hasn't proven itself to be the next big thing yet.

No it really hasn't and to be honest im not sure it will ever grab hold of the market very tightly. Netflix and other digital distribution methods however are gaining momentum fast and now due 1080p instant on which is pretty amazing for a streaming service.

TBH I think Digital Distribution will be the next real "format" to grab hold or at least comfortably share the marketplace with a physcial medium like BR. They will most likely coexist together as many people just like to have physical items in hand to justify their purchases.

Haha damn that's the perfect word for that era. I actually lost interest around the early 20's and started watching again mid 40's so i guess i wasn't alone.
