True, "us ground fighters" do have a disadvantage at the start of the fight, but I have been working MT for a while now (not that I am great at it), so I would throw a few head kicks from the outside (far enough to not get countered) so that he would keep his hands up high! Once the hands are up, I shoot... If I grab a leg without getting KO'd I think the fight is over in a matter of time!

Worth the risk in my opinion...

Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha..... Just stop Toney... stop. You can't cut it as a boxer anymore, you definitely can't learn new tricks and fight at a high level in MMA.

Just shut your mouth, and crawl back to obscurity.

Freddie Roach (pac man and amir khans trainer..and hall of fame trainer) recently was asked who his best fighters were. He reflected back to James Toney. He said he had the purest skill of any fighter he has ever known but his lack of discipline limited his success. He is spot on. James toney was and actually still is an outstanding fighter. He can pretty much bang with anyone and is still a good gatekeeper in a weight division he never should have been in (heavyweight). As a middleweight he was almost unstoppable; except lost to roy jones jr.

I can't blame him for taking cracks at Dana. DW is getting ridiculous lately. I don't know if it is the steroids or his own training in which he thinks he is the ultimate bad ass but his mouth is plain vile. He constantly is putting down boxing and talking about it's corruption when there has been some irony in that lately. Who cares if Lights Out Toney is taking a Jab at Dana...he was calling out Liddell years ago. JT and many boxers are beginning to respect MMA fighters. Ironically it is mostly just people who have never fought in the ring or cage that say "this is better than that or if A then B." Jenz Pulver is a big friend of Tim Slyvia and was begging Tim to NOT fight Mercer in a pure boxing match because of his respect for the sweet science. Also, many high level MMA guys are training with boxers in world reknowned gyms to work on their standup/boxing. Boxers and MMA fighters are the ones laughing to the bank as internet people continue to bash other sports and disciplines because at the end of the day; a fighter is a fighter.

edit: 72-6 (44 KOS) is nothing to scoff at. He is past his prime but still fights in 2009. He has some of the BEST defense in boxing and that is why he can still bang...much like hopkins (but with less discipline). He is tough as nails and is a throw back fighter. He has NEVER ducked one fighter...ever. That deserves respect. He is just rattling off at the mouth a bit...just like any other fighter. PEace.

LOL before u guys ripped james tonney apart, remember he's dissing dana white not MMA. In fact he praises mmma.

"[Boxing's] gone downhill because look at the fighters we got...Everybody is scared to fight each other. That's the main reason why people are going from boxing to MMA, because MMA is putting on the fights that everybody wanna see … My daddy was one of them MMA guys. I love it. I like watching it. They putting on the best shows. That's why the boxing people get mad because they getting all the fans. They're giving the fans all the good matches, which should be done in boxing. I watch it, but they can't mess with me … I like [Quinton] Rampage [Jackson]. I like watching … not Brock Lesnar. He's phony. Fedor Emelianenko, he aight. Georges St. Pierre."

Deadly on his feet. I highly doubt during his boxing career that he was able to put an adequate amount of time into learning a ground discipline. My friend just turned pro in boxing, and he knows how to grapple and can hold his own with normal people or people who casualy train. But against someone who trains at it on a daily basis would destroy him on the ground.

The ground game is simply not of use to them in boxing. So naturally they would not train hard at it if any. Therefor it is most likely that Toney would be taken down and beaten if he could not get a quick KO while the fight was still standing.

Very good wrestlers can take people down at will. (GSP, Henderson, Koscheck)

But if your timing is good and you are able to read the other person, you can get a good sprawl most of the time. But it is very difficult when facing very good wrestlers.
