WEC eyes 2010 for PPV

WEC eyes 2010 PPV
By Damon Martin/MMAWeekly.com
Dec 8, 4:46 pm EST

As World Extreme Cagefighting continues to grow, 2010 promises to be the biggest year yet for the former Lemoore, Calif.-based promotion. Taking the UFC’s place for the Arnold Classic weekend in Ohio in March, moving to pay-per-view, and a return to DirectTV all in sight, WEC general manager Reed Harris says big things are on the horizon.

Talking with MMAWeekly Radio on Monday night, Harris said all signs are pointing to satellite subscribers getting their WEC fights back sooner rather than later.

“The last thing I heard a couple weeks ago is they were both talking and they had both come back to the table to discuss it, and I had heard that maybe we would be back on by Dec. 19, so that’s what I’m hoping for,” Harris commented.

The promotion’s next event is WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff on that date in Las Vegas.

The other confirmation Harris disclosed is that the WEC will absolutely be on pay-per-view by the end of 2010, but once again, sooner may be the call rather than later.

“I’ll give you a definite answer on that, yes,” Harris answered when asked about integrating the pay model.

“I think we’re shooting for mid-year at this point, but it could be sooner, it just depends on what happens in January. It depends on how our fights go and our ratings and all that stuff.”

One card that sticks out in particular earlier in the year is the WEC’s show heading to Columbus, Ohio, for the weekend of the Arnold Classic. The UFC took the spot for the last three years, but this year it’s the WEC that will move into the Buckeye State in March.

Harris confirmed that the promotion would do a Saturday night show, which is a different slot than the promotion normally runs its shows in. While nothing has been solidified, two big fighters that are likely to end up on that card are Brian Bowles, making his first bantamweight title defense against Dominic Cruz, and former champion Miguel Torres, making his return to action.

For now, Harris says the important things to focus on are the shows coming up over the next month then they’ll start making the decisions for the rest of 2010.

“There’re a lot of factors we look at. We definitely know if we’re going to do a pay-per-view it’s got to be compelling fights that people are willing to pay for, and it’s got to be that must see fight. That’s what we’re trying to create.”
Man I hope not. I love having the WEC fights on TV for free. I have satellite and Vs is gone but they did mention that it would be back sooner than later.

Some people can't afford all of the UFC events, now they have to buy WEC as well if they wanna see them anymore. One more reason why the UFC and WEC should merge and be on the same PPV.

I don't like this idea at all. Either keep it free on VS or merge with the UFC so we can have some seriously fun cards to watch that will be worth the $50.

I still don't think that many people are going to pay for it even at a cheaper price, idk I could be wrong though.

Also a lot of UFC's ppv buys come from bars and sports restaurants, will they also be willing to buy these fights?

Idk maybe I'm just to cheap, but after paying for cable, internet, and an occasional UFC card I just have nothing left to spend on visual entertainment each month.

I enjoy watching the WEC, but I wouldn't pay for a WEC PPV.
