Not Tapping

Why?

Why would somebody not tap out when they are being choked unconscious?

Is it because they have never been put to sleep before so don't understand the risk they are in, or just leave it too late because they think they can get out of it?

It doesn't make sense to me. If I'm fighting a world class BJJ Black Belt and I'm in a choke and I start getting tunnel vision, I'm going to tap.

It's stupid not to and dangerous in my opinion, especially if your going to do a Tim Sylvia

EDIT*

I'm obviously bringing this up after the Kongo going night nights this evening.

I assume we're talking about Kongo? It can also have a lot to do with the power of the hold, as well. Frank not only locked in on quickly, but he put a great deal of power into it as well... I'm guessing Kongo was out before he even had a chance to tap. As for others... some guys just have a never say die attitude, and would sooner go to sleep over tapping. It's just their mentality. For better or for worse.

I guess I am just asking for clarification, as I'm not a fighter myself, so I really don't know how much warning you get before lights out happens.

Who knows, maybe Kongo thought he could still fight his way out of it.

I always found it strange that the Gracies would rather have a broken arm than tap. I guess it's to show they won't ever give up, but if your arms broken, you're out of commission for a few months, whereas you tap, you can be back training the next day if you want.

I think for a bit kongo was trying to get out of it but then, mir put a great amount of pressure on the choke and I believe kongo just did not want to move his hands from trying to create space even for a split second to tap, I have put people to sleep before and asked them why they did not tap and most say that they forget all about tapping and instincts kick in just to fight for air.

Not sure, but Big fat Timmy seemed to learn his lesson after the first time, maybe Kongo will after this?

I dont think Kongo thought he could get out of it. I think he didnt want to tap to Mir plain and simple. Rather fall asleep than to tap I guess...

Its called heart

many fighters would rather die getting choked then tapout, its kinda like a disgusting thing to do for some fighters. Fighters like Matt Hamill, Matt hamill fought with two dislocated shoulders and still won.

Thats heart my friends

Is that the fight with Jon Jones? Pretty impressive that he kept going, but he was getting wrecked by Jones...if not for those illegal elbows, it didn't look like Hamill could continue.

Yup that fight.

And um, the reason he looked like he couldn't continue is because he couldn't. Two dislocated shoulders, a broken nose and two pools of blood filling your eye sockets. I think I would have called it quits lol
