Herb Dean
I really think Herb Dean's decision not to stop the fight in the first just goes to show why he is the best ref out there right... well he and Big John of course.
The moment that shot connected from BJ and he swarmed all over him, one of the first thoughts I had was "Mirgliotta would have stopped this fight already". Which of course would have lead to controversy and BS forum argument for the next 6 months. Thanks Herb!
My two cents,

I really don't think there would have been much controversy, he seemed pretty out of it for a few seconds there. Herb definitely did what Diego wanted. BUT, make no mistake, 5 round beatings like that add up in the end, and shorten careers.

I agree 100% with the career point. But I disagree completely with the "could have been stoppage". If Herb had stepped in when BJ was pounding on him and Diego had that clinging for life single, that would have been more than enough for the "early stoppage" chants to start all over the MMA world.

Deigo was constantly moving while rocked, he wasnt out cold. so of course there would controversy for another short stoppage if he decided to pull BJ off him and he stands up right after.
you have to let this type of stuff go in a championship fight.

Exactly what I was thinking last night when I saw this. In my opinion, Herb is the best ref in the business right now, ahead of Big John. Not hating or anything on Big John, but Herb just showed last night why he is slightly ahead. I thought he should have stopped the fight because it really looked like Diego fell asleep for a second or two, but Herb gave him a chance, which any challenger deserves. And the best part is, no one is bitching about it
My P4P best ref list, LOL
1. Herb Dean
2. John McCarthy
3. Mario Yamasaki (not sure on the spelling)

damn I would never put Herb Dean as the best ref just because he is never consistent, it's like he can't decide. some fights he lets the guy get pounded on forever and then others the guy get's punched 3 times and he's all over it

At one point a stoppage could very well of been warranted. However I am glad the fight went on. Herb Deans great, it's nice to have an event without contreversy for once

I'm just going to say that I am very glad herb didn't stop the fight when he could have. I really enjoyed seeing the champ in action for five rounds. There is such a notable difference when one watches one of the champions in action versus virtually everyone else. I am not sure that I can include Lyoto and Brock in this assessment just yet, but as far as Penn, GSP, and Silva go, I think they are the pinnacle of MMA skill.
