Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller promoted, completes UFC 109 main card
by MMAjunkie.com Staff on Dec 18, 2009 at 10:00 am ET
A middleweight contest between Demian Maia (11-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and Dan Miller (11-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) originally slated for the un-aired preliminary card has been promoted to the pay-per-view portion of UFC 109 in February.
The fight takes the spot that opened when Antonio Rogerio Nogueira pulled out of a fight with Brandon Vera earlier this week due to an ankle injury.
UFC 109 takes place Feb. 6 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Maia fights for the first time since a devastating knockout loss to Nate Marquardt at UFC 102 in August. The loss was the first defeat of Maia's career and snapped a five-fight UFC win streak for the Brazilian submission ace, who began his UFC career with submission wins over Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen.
Maia likely would have earned a title shot with a win over Marquardt.
Miller, meanwhile, dropped a unanimous decision to Chael Sonnen at UFC 98 in May. The loss was Miller's first since 2006 and snapped a nine-fight win streak for the New Jersey native and former IFL champion, who began his UFC career with wins over Rob Kimmons, Matt Horwich and Jake Rosholt.
In addition to the pay-per-view broadcast, the UFC will air two UFC 109 preliminary-card bouts on Spike TV as part of its "UFC Prelim" event series. Those matchups have not been selected, though.
The latest UFC 109 card now includes:
MAIN CARD
Mark Coleman vs. Randy Couture
Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago
Demian Maia vs. Dan Miller
Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
PRELIMINARY CARD
Justin Buchholz vs. Mac Danzig
Melvin Guillard vs. Ronnys Torres
Tim Hague vs. Chris Tuchscherer
Rob Emerson vs. Phillipe Nover
Rolles Gracie vs. Mostapha Al Turk

I am happy about this. I wanna see how Maia looks coming off of his loss to Marquardt.

Maia needed to be on the main card. Love that guy. 109 looks pretty good.

Meh. I am not excited for the main event at all. I really don't have an interest in watching Couture and Coleman fight each other. I think it is a good fight to be on a card, but definitely not a ppv headline.

I think Couture wouldn't Headline a Main Event anymore, if Dana and he wouldn't be so close friends.

From what I gather, people merely assumed that Vera vs. Jones would take place at 109. Yet it was reported from the get-go that it would main event a later Fight Night. I think they should have left it on 109, as both men have plenty of time to prepare, and it's a heavily appealing and buy-worthy bout, but hey... I don't run things.
