...Royce is the man. Always has been. He introduced a BJJ game that was really untouchable at the time. This 6 foot- 170 lb man was dominating everyone with mind-boggling Jiu Jitsu. Now with so many well-rounded fighters, you can't always dominate with just one disipline...

He is an extremely talented fighter and will always have a place in the history books, but he is also a jerk (in interviews at least). Down here in Tampa on BTLS (radio show), the host asked how he would fare vs top guys today if he was in his prime. Royce responds by saying he could beat GSP right now at his current age....the host was still pretty cool and didn't bring up the Hughes beating but Royce just refuses to give other people much respect.

I always try to find ways to like him since one of his pupils is my BJJ instructor and he speaks highly of him....but man it's hard.
I can see where you are coming from, he comes off as cocky sometimes. But at the same time I understand why, most people are talking about him like he's wright brothers plane in an era of jet planes. For all that's he's done in the sport people act like he was relevant only because he was "fighting barroom brutes" with no skill. I would be upset myself.

As far as him beating GSP, that's just pride talking, and in a way that's one of the things that I admire about the Gracies, in that they are a prideful bunch that don't get intimidated. Take the Kimo fight for instance(Or Ken Shamrock), I would have been chicken shit knowing I have to fight a guy that's 230 pure muscle with that nasty mug, yet Gracie showed no fear, and took care of business

Here is the interview audio, pretty good overall for any Royce fan + a fair amount of general MMA talk.

seeing as matt hughes destroyed Royce back when Matt had some relevancy I'd say Royce would be lucky not to sustain life altering brain damage against GSP.

I think people forget Matt Hughes showed the superior BJJ when he fought Gracie, hell he damn near submitted him and probably could have snapped Gracie`s arm had he chose to. Gracie`s BJJ is not at an elite level and a guy like GSP would destroy him.

Quoted for truth. Gracie was dominant in the '90's, 'cause his style was unknown. Is he a pioneer? Sure, he should be respected, but to compare him to any current top fighter would be crazy.

You gotta give it up for Royce Gracie, how can you not? He truly is a pioneer in the sport and without him The UFC would not be anywhere near where it is today. Immediately I am taken back to the early 90's, finding my uncle's UFC tapes in his basement and watching UFC 1 and thinking "man, this is so much better than WWF".

I can respect what Gracie did for the sport without exaggerating his skill level or his true contributions to the sport, something I find many people have a great deal of difficulty doing.
