Dana White: Frankie Edgar, Not Gray Maynard, to Face BJ Penn Next

It's official: Frankie Edgar is the No. 1 UFC lightweight contender.

Dana White confirmed with MMA Fighting Tuesday that Edgar will receive the next 155-pound title shot against champion BJ Penn. There had been talk of Gray Maynard facing Penn next, but in a video interview shot Tuesday in New York City, White said he didn't think Maynard was 100% ready to fight for the title just yet.

The UFC president added that the tentative plan was for the title fight to happen in Abu Dhabi in April, but that the UFC 112 event in the Middle East is still not officially confirmed.

The organization announced on Tuesday that Flash Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi government, had purchased a 10% stake of Zuffa, the parent company of UFC and WEC.

Edgar is 11-1, and recently defeated Matt Veach last month. His only loss came against Maynard in April 2008. He holds wins over the likes of Sean Sherk, Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and Jim Miller.

Maynard defeated Nate Diaz on Monday via split decision. "The Bully" is 9-0 with 1 no contest.

White also said that he hoped Anderson Silva would fight Vitor Belfort for the middleweight title on the same card. Renzo Gracie vs. Matt Hughes is also expected to take place on the April card.

Edgar deserves a shot however imo he has 0 chance of beating Penn. Yes everyone has a punchers chance in mma however i think Penn takes this via whatever he wants to take it by. Fight may go out of the first but wont go past the second. I like Edgar but Penn is in a different to league to all the lhw and if sanchez, florian, sherk etc couldnt do much to Penn then i dont see what Edgar could do that they couldnt

I didn't think Frankie Edgar could take on the likes of Sean Sherk but look how that turned out. Maybe he'll surprise us again.

You forget that this isn't just some brutal sport where everyones out to kill each other. Its much more like a game of physical chess.-looney liam

Frankie Edgar is the one man in LW that I've wanted to see face Penn, although Penn is looking indestructable in the weight class I wanna see Edgar box against him.

Sherk fought like an idiot when he fought Edgar, taking nothing away from edgar tho he did amazing that night. However Penn makes amazing fighters look very average and i see no way in which Edgar wins this fight

Gray is undefeated, has wins over Nate, Roger, Miller, Rich, and even Frankie himself, yet Frankie gets a title shot.

I don't get it.

This fight is about as interesting as it is for Gray to fight him, or anyone else.. but he doesn't deserve the title shot over Gray.

Goes to show what wins and losses mean. To be fair, Maynard didn't seem all that eager to fight Penn yet and Edgar seems to have stepped up his game. Looks like it'll be a boxing match. Frankie looks like he probably has the best boxing outside of Penn in the division.

Regardless of the loss to Maynard a year and a half ago, Edgar has certainly looked more impressive IMO since that time. Maynard's last two fights have been split decisions and his bout with Diaz was less than stellar. Meanwhile Edgar had a great fight with Franca, picked Sherk apart and than ran through Veach, who at the time seemd to be a stronger fighter with a better ground game. Therefore Edgar is the logical choice to be ponded by BJ. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter, BJ in his current frame of mind and preparation is on a seek and destroy mission of all LW contenders. Edgar, Maynard, rematches with KenFlo and Sanchez, bring in Faber with 10 more lbs, bring in Henderson, Gomi...it just doesn't matter. For arguments sake though I think his next three fights at LW go like this, Edgar, Gomi, Maynard.
