Haha! Yeah, not the best statement by Paul there. But in his defense, they were both pretty highly rated.

If I was to fight a mate for the title, then I would jump at the opportunity. But if it's a regular non-title fight I couldn't see myself doing it.. I mean it's gotta be hard, being best mates with someone for so long then knowing you're about to step into the Octagon and beat the living shit out of them, and possibly indanger their health (lets face it, it could happen..).

Not only that.. but if two best mates faced off I doubt very much they'd put 100% in against eachother. I mean what do you think would happen if the Klitscho brothers fought? Their's no way they're gunna throw their hardest shots at eachother.

The Klitschos have the advantage of there being 4 HW belts to share around. If there was one boxing HW belt? What then? Sit there at #2 waiting for your brother to lose? If so, who fights you and who fights him? If you are #1 contender, then the #2 contender has to fight you or your brother? Who decides? Its a load of fecking shit and has no place in SPORT this type of nonsense.

The mechanics and rules of a sport should not be fecked with by the participants, based on some personal dislike. Thats BS. Health issues is one thing. "I dont wanna fight my mate" is something else.

i think if the ufc was run like a proper sporting competition and not a "night of entertainment" i would be more bothered by teammates refusing to fight

by that i mean things like the silly title shots and match-ups, or a lack proper rankings or even a knockout competition. the fights do have an element of randomness about them

if it was absolutely obvious and imperitive to say a title shot, then they should fight

dont get me wrong i think they (silva/machida too) should fight anyway. not because the ufc says so but i think any fighter should always want to fight the best, unless they feel they are not ready

having said all that i reckon refusing to fight a teammate would be a good way to hype up said fight if it were to happen

just my opinion

The two welterweights, friends since their teenage years, could end up having to face each other in the UFC. With GSP on his mind, Hardy would not be drawn on the subject on this occasion.
No comment, from Hardy.

I don't know how many of you guys commentting on this are fighters and train with guys on a daily basis, but I wouldn't fight another guy from my gym ever, Where I train we are more like a family, and yea, we spar and beat the shit out of each other daily but we arn't in there trying to hurt each other we are there helping each other better our game.

granted our situation is a little different because say if one of our guys is the WW champ in one promotion and another guy is in line for a title shot, another promotion can sign him to a title fight here. We have at least 7 promotions putting shows on in Mass alone.

I am not a fighter. Just dig the sport. To be honest, in 99% of cases its never a problem. But when we start talking about 2 or 3 top 10 ranked fighters in the same weight, training together and refusing to fight, you must admit, it causes problems to whatever organization is trying to rank fighters and produce champions.

it may cause problems but you can't force a fighter to leave the camp he's been training with since day 1... Not only that it could cause a problem with the coaches as well and the whole team splitting the gym in two. I don't care how much $$ is thrown at me I wouldn't fight a training partner for anything.

I'm not talking about $$$. Stuff that. I've no interest in purses. I'm making the point that when it comes to championships and contenders, there need to be rankings for a reason. Otherwise nobody knows who is in line for what.

I assume you as a fighter want to be the best fighter you can be, right? What is that to you? If you fight purely for yourself and have no desires for medals or awards then that's cool. But if your dream is to wear a belt, how do you deal with that if one of your partners has it?

Its a mad situation. I appreciate your insight.

Yeah it sucks, but they aren't the first 2 doing this so I don't mind it as much. I propably wouldn't fight my friend(s) either unless it was for the title or atleast clear title shot, because as there is boatload of other guys to fight why fight a guy I don't want to and wont really have to?

I'd do what most guys do, If i wanted to wear the belt that bad, I would move up or down(if possible) a weight class, now if everyone on your team is holding a title in every weight class you're shit outta luck unless you make the decision to leave... Now some guys will leave their camps and such when a teammate takes a title... look at Deigo when GSP won the WW title, he left training at Jacksons gym so he could get a shot at it even though it never happened...

it all depends on what the fighter wants to do.
