I agree. It is sweet for nostalgia purposes to watch the original format, but then you realize that it is simply unsustainable due to legislation against it. Also, as Toxic said, it had some extremely boring moments.

You could ask the same question about football (American) when it first began, when you were not allowed to throw the ball. It was all running. yeah, sweet, interesting to watch once, but it really isn't an evolved sport yet until now. The same thing with MMA.

...Good poll..

...I think the golden years have already started when the UFC went to the next level with Griffin/Bonnar 1. I think that's when the momentum really picked up. No wonder it made #1 on the top 100 fights. I think MMA has about reached it's peak in evolving. The old days it was one discipline vs. another. Now everyone is becoming well-rounded in all areas....

I voted that the best is yet to come, and I do believe that, but thinking about Anderson Silva, Machida, BJ Penn, GSP, and Fedor, Im sure I will look back on this era as the golden years of mma.

Not to mention the huge stigma violent sports had on them in the 90's, and old UFC certainly wasn't short on some vicious ends.
Severn/Gracie was probably worse, Severn was a beast of a wrestler but it was one of his first fights and once he got Gracie down he had no ability to inflict damage or submit Gracie so he just hung out on top.

There were a few boring fights ack in the day even more so then today but some were just crazy. Fights like Royce vs Kimo are just so intense.

The old UFC had some shady buisiness going on to though like Maurice Smith being unable to continue at UFC 6 and Oleg Taktarov instead fighting his training partner who let him go onto fight Tank Abott fresh by giving him the win. For once Abott had a reason to be pissed.

Someone else hit the nail on the head, in that much of the excitement was created by our ignorance of the sport way back when. I rented the UFC tapes to see Tank smash faces... I had no idea what was going on. I saw the UFC as a real-live Bloodsport, I was secretly hoping Frank Dux and Steven Seagal would compete. And Chong-Li!...Chong-Li!...Chong-Li!

The UFC is the premiere organization of a sport in it's infancy. Are the Golden Years gone by? Absolutely not, hell, the UFC hasn't even hit puberty yet. How long has the lightweight class even been around for. And a few years ago the heavyweight division was absolute garbage. Just wait and see 100 years from now where the sport is.

Take the best professional boxer in the world and rank his boxing skill against the best boxers in the UFC
Do that for wrestling, BJJ, Mua Thai, Karate.....

the level of skill of the fighters competing in the UFC is only going to go up.

I was preparing to write something exactly like the above. Horrible was the original UFC. Royces BJJ was interesting at best and very fecking boring at worst. Watching him hold onto Kimos hair for 5 minutes was not cool. Also, see how Royce quit after that fight and never showed up again for years. Soon as the Gi disappeared and Royce had to fight skin, he was lost. Not good MMA.

But, It got me into it which is all that counts. For the record, the first thing that made me sit up and go, "now thats amazing" was Randy at UFC13. A million times more dynamic and exciting than Royce, Shamrock, Sevren and the rest of them lot.

Thats might be right! But you have to agree with me, that at one point the border is reached. At one point there is no improving anymore, at one point the human body reached the maximum. Nobody will ever run much faster than Usain Bolt does today. There might be a kid wich grows up today that will beat Usains record. But if he does it won't be by a huge number like Usain did last year.

Just ask all those physicist who can't even explain anymore why Usain Bolt can run that fast. They already said it is impossible but it wasn't. I doupt they will be wrong again!

I can't believe that this will go on like this. In MMA it's a little bit different, because this Sport only exists 16-20 years now. There is still a lot of space for improving. But when you look at guys like Lyoto, Anderson, GSP than it's hard to believe. It already looks like inhuman what these guys are doing.
