UFC Freeweight - who wins and why?

Ok, so I've just been watching the DVD extras on the Renzo Gracie documentary, Legacy, and in one BJ is talking about weight classes, giving out and saying they shouldn't exist because martial arts has always been about the big guy fighting the little guy, etc, etc.

SO... if, hypothetically, the UFC decided to introduce a free, open weight competition who would win and why?

Lesner.

Only joking mate, I reckon the only person who could beat Lesner is another massive heavyweight, anybody below his weightclass he beats.

So for me it's Lesner

Haha, no worries mate I'm presuming most will say Brock but I'm interested to see if anyone thinks someone else could do it. Imagine Silva got him in the clinch [and held it] and landed a few knees in Brock's big old head?!

Basically, any fighter below his weight class HAS to not get taken down.

IF they can avoid being taken down, then they have a chance, but it's not TOO difficult for a massive man mountain to just weather the storm and drag you down and from there, quite honestly

Haha, totally. I'd say its even difficult to pull guard when trying to wrap your legs around a tank.

Other than Brock...hmm...Shogun?

If he could also avoid being taken down he would have a good chance. Or maybe it would be an other hevyweight like JDS,Mir,Nog.

Lesnar is the most realistic choice here, no matter how fast you are on your feet he WILL take you down, he is as quick as a LHW... but there is always a punchers chance in any fight.

The only one who can stop Lesnar is another big HW thats good on the ground.

Lesnar or Mir, Im really not sure who takes it on the rubber match and as I like them both I'd rather just wait and see instead of playing the guessing game. Mir said it best though; No-one in the world can avoid Brock's takedowns, so just have to plan accordingly to that. Even though GSP is a wrestling wizard I doubt he could handle the 70-90 pound difference. Even Randy who has controlled huge guys with his wrestling couldn't really handle Brock well enough, so I think its ridiculous to think that if Randy couldn't do it anyone below HW could do it either.

As for miracle sub... Well Mir did it once so I suppose it could happen again. However Brock showed great positioning and technique against Mir on second fight and I really doubt even Maia would be able to surprise him with something flashy while taking those hits from a guy so much bigger than him.
Standing up anything is possible, but I dare to say Brock will land that takedown before even the fast guys like Vitor or Shogun can land anything fight ending on him.

Either way I wouldn't mind seeing JDS, Shogun and Vitor bully some of the MWs, WWs and LWs though. Shogun vs. Penn for example would be hilarious. Same for JDS vs. Machida and Vitor vs. Fitch.

I think it would be a LHW, they are big enough to last in a cage with HW's and quick enough to chase some of those smaller guys around.

I think the winner would depend a lot on format, if they were fighting more than once a night you have to drop a lot of HW because they just don't have the cardio.

I'd vote Shogun, deadly striking and great cardio. Machida for his speed and ability to not take damage, which would allow him to fight several times without worry of gassing. A.Silva too, insane striking and great ground game, only worry with him is his TD defense isn't out of this world and I wonder if he'd be able to get up and strike if some of the HW's took him down.

Think. It Ain't Illegal Yet

You would have to give it to a HW imo. Maybe Mir or Nog but most likely a guy like Lesnar.

Other than that maybe Machida or Shogun. GSP could toss around a few LHWs and alot of MWs but HWs are just too big.
