Brian Bowles is well aware of the old saying that a champion isn't really a champion until he's defended his belt.

The WEC bantamweight title-holder said he doesn't really buy into the belief, but when it comes to his main-event fight with Dominick Cruz at next week's WEC 47 event, readers don't think it'll matter.

In our most recent MMAjunkie.com/"Inside MMA" poll, the vast majority of voters predicted a successful title defense for the champ.

We asked the simple question, "Who wins the WEC 47 main event between bantamweight champion Brian Bowles and challenger Dominick Cruz?"

And it wasn't even close.

The results were revealed on Friday's new edition of "Inside MMA" on HDNet, and four out of five voters – 83 percent in all – predicted a win for Bowles; 73 percent expect the fight to end via stoppage and 10 percent via decision.

The remaining 17 percent of the vote went to Cruz; 10 percent predict the challenger to win via stoppage and 7 percent by decision.

The 135-pounders meet March 6 at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Their bout and the rest of the main card airs on Versus and kicks off a big stretch for the WEC, which includes a pay-per-view debut that WEC officials said is "pivotal" to the company's future.

Who wins the WEC 47 main event between
bantamweight champion Brian Bowles and
challenger Dominick Cruz?

73% - Bowles via stoppage
10% - Bowles via decision
10% - Cruz via stoppage
7% - Cruz via decision

Bowles (8-0 MMA, 5-0 WEC), who defeated the seemingly unbeatable Miguel Torres at WEC 42 to win the title in 2009, makes his first title defense after sitting out nearly a half year recovering from a broken hand. He meets one of the division's fastest-rising contenders in Cruz (14-1 MMA, 4-1 WEC), who scored a lopsided decision win over Joseph Benavidez for his fourth consecutive WEC victory (and fifth overall) at the same WEC 42 card.

In addition to Bowles vs. Cruz, WEC 47 features a co-headliner of Miguel Torres vs. Benavidez, and the winner is likely to get the next title shot. So the fate of the WEC's bantamweight division essentially will be determined next week.

So, did the readers get it right? Does Bowles have an 83 percent chance of winning, or are fans underrating the crafty Cruz? State your case in the comments section below.

That's pretty insane. I think Cruz takes this fight, too. o_O

Bowles is gonna come in heavily over hyped because of being the guy to knock off Torres. Unfortunately that is really the only major accomplishment of Bowles to date and I definatly don't believe he has earned the degree of respect he is getting.
