I think GSP would be a successful MW, but not sure if he would be a champion. And what Dana wants at this moment is for GSP to be a Champion. Why is that?!? I think it's simple: money, PPV buys, media interest, publicity, exposure...IN CANADA that is..!!!!
Remember UFC 97, pre-fight conference???
Dana White said (quote): "Canada is the mecca for mixed martial arts...I honestly don't think there are too many places we could go and sell 22,000 tickets as fast as we did here. People up here tell me ...".
No doubt, the interest for MMA in Canada is very high. GSP was named sporting personality of the year in Canada, MMA is becoming more and more popular. And GSP is a the main reason for that.
If i'm not mistaking MMA is not legal in all canadian states. Dana has noticed the rise in popularity of MMA in Canada and he intends to take full advantage of that. Proof: UFC 115 Vancouver. And the potential is huge. After USA, Canada is the UFC's second biggest market....
And that's why i think he needs GSP as champion, in order to generate a lot of interest from the canadian fans. It's not like the canadian fans wouldn't buy tikets or PPV's no more if GSP would fight at MW, but at WW he is the undisputed king, and it's another feeling for canadians to have a cnadian as a champion, as one of the best.

And now, Dana is taking a similar approach on the british market imo, another one with huge potential.
Have you ever thought that one of the reason for Hardy's title shot could be this one...??? ()
MMA is way bigger than boxing in Canada. Where I live every other bar shows the UFC, just about every pub an sports bar and even a couple night clubs. You know how many show boxing. 2. In a city of over 80,000 there are 2 sports bars that show boxing and they don't fill up. And there are no Canadian states. We have provinces and territories but no states.

This makes a lot of sense; can't say for sure that it's correct but it's a damn good theory

GSP would be entertaining to watch at MW but he could lose, GSP is afraid to lose, I am sure he has good reasons but if he fought 3 times at MW against top 10 contenders he would lose at LEAST ONCE. Against AS he would be destroyed...DESTROYED...and I don't say that lightly. He can move up but he will be no better than a Koscheck, in fact that would be a pick'em fight. Otherwise step up to the big boys!

2 reasons.
1the fighters at mw are stronger and more talented. Gsp could get beat by some of them. Good bjj practitioners like Maia much better strikers like Nate and silva and more talented wrestlers like starnes. Not only that but gsp is a strong MW when he fights against those big guys that strength that gives him an advantage won't be much of a factor.

2 I hate it when champs move up because it puts the belt on hold and makes a #1 contender have to take an extra fight.

Silva and Penn aren't that big of a draws for the UFC then GSP. I guess that's the main reason..
i agree with that and i also agree that gsp is a huge draw because of his backing by the whole of canada

Doesn't stop Penn moving up and getting his ass kicked.
