Frankie Edgar, Anyone??
Let me start by saying that I'm a Penn fan and I scored the first two rounds in favor Penn gave the last three rounds to Edgar.
What I find really impressive about Frankie Edgar, aside form his incredible hand speed and movement, is his attitude. I'm really impressed with the fact that he's calling out a very formidable oppponent in Gray who handed him his only loss and is very eager to redeem himself in the Octagon. Because the reality is, Gray Maynard, despite not matching up well with Penn, or even Florian, is the worst possible much up for Frankie in the entire division right now.
Frankie matches up surprisingly well with Florian and even Penn. I don't see Florian getting Edgar to the canvas nor do I see him coming close to outpointing him on the feet; Frankie is simply too fast. While Florian is very accurate in the stand-up, he's also relatively (relative being the operative word) slow (with his hands) with retrospect to the faster fighters in the the LW dision i.e., Penn and the aforementioned champ. Penn, in the past, has struggled with smaller wiry opponents (Uno, Pulver, even Serra was a good fight) back in the day. Penn also is giving up one of his key advantages he brings 99% of the time into a fight: speed. Not to assume that Penn couldn't get the best of Edgar in a re-match, but he would definately have to work extra hard to try and keep up with Edgar's pase if he were to fight him again in the future. Also, not that this would necessarily be the case in a re-match, but Penn didn't take Edgar to the ground because he had a hard time dealing with Edgar's movement and timing; keep in mind, while Penn does have some decent takedwons ...he's not all-American ...he's not going to pull a low single out of his ass or anything.
Back to my point, the fact that Edgar is calling out his toughest challenge (stylistically of course) speaks wonders to his confidence and determination to be the champ. To reiterate, I don't think Maynard is the number 2 or 3 LW in the world, but because he is larger and a more decorated wrestler, he presents a serious threat to Frankie; I mean, all Maynard would have to do is outwrestle Frankie for three or four rounds and thats very possible; easier said than done ofcourse. However, Maynard is the best wreslter at 155 lbs in MMA.
I know this may be irrelevent, but I don't think I've heard Florian say Sanchez' name sense he came down to 155 lbs...
