Hmmm I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that MMA has a much higher percentage of fans who actually train and compete in their sport (or a component of it) than boxing fans or “wrestling” fans.

Just at my place of work (and I work in a very academically driven industry) we have several BJJ competitors, about a dozen who train BJJ, one SAMBO guy who has a pro MMA fight and a few kick boxers, all MMA fans.

Did Robert DeNiro try to live vicariously through Jake LaMotta in the Raging Bull? Stallone in the Rocky movies? Shit.. you don't see DeNiro saying he is a ******* boxer. They are just acting. They are in the entertainment business. How many times have they said this? Too many. I am sure Ric never wanted to be a freaking fighter. Same goes for the actors in movies portraying a boxer, ect.. It's not hard to understand. Some of you aren't very smart.

Anyone who watches 'pro wrestling' over the ago of 12 isn't very smart. And my IQ is quite high, thanks for the insult though.

Do you realize what we are watching? The sport we are watching? We enjoy watching two men beat the shit out of each other. We enjoy watching two people go at it until one bleeds so much, that they have to stop the fight. Do you think you need a high IQ to follow this sport? I sometimes question why I watch this sport, but for some reason, I can't stop watching it. Listen, I've been watching this sport since 2003. I can't count the amount of idiots I've seen watching UFC with two hands and two feet. The amount of overweight, drunk, jobless, ect.. people I've seen with tapout shirts, tattoos, and so on is amazing. Before we criticize anything, we should look at what we watch. It wasn't an insult. I am just saying that it is something that isn't hard to understand.

Personally I like watching the UFC because of the sheer talent these men have and the exciting nature of the sport. Obviously you don't need a high IQ to follow the sport, or any sport for that matter, but that wasn't the point I was making, I was commenting on the fact that you said "Some of you aren't very smart." Obviously there are certain people who may be overweight, drunk, unemployed etc, but the same can be said for football, rugby, etc. None of this compares to watching WWE which is completely dramatized nonsense. I can see why kids enjoy it, but adults? sad. And anyway, my original point was that Rick Flair has some nerve bad mouthing the fans of MMA when he takes part in what can only be described as a fake attempt at what seems to resemble sport.

Yeah Rick was totally right when he said its a small window of time for most MMA fighters. I did see where he was going with the vicarious thing, but He didnt say everyone. Hes probably seen some shitty fans and people from the mma community. I know I have. Was he talking about Kimbo with the beard?

I tried watching WWE Smackdown last night. There was a 20 man battle royal. I changed it quickly. The WWE doesn't even consider themselves a sport anymore. You never hear the term "wrestling" or "wrestler" on their programming. It's all "sports entertainment" and "superstar". I was a huge fan of pro wrestling when I was a child. I also watched the power rangers. lol. After I discovererd MMA, I never looked back. And sure you have your typical rednecks that are "fight fans" but so what? MMA fighting is the purest sport available. Its just one man trying to incompacitate the other. The groud game is genius. The stand up is accurate. These guys are in the best shape of any athlete. There are no time outs. Just a brief pause between rounds. Is it a blood sport? Sure. But its also a human chess match pushing human beings physically and mentally to points that no other sport can immitate. And when asked "whats the most exciting thing about mma?" The answer is simple. It can end at any time. Every football is going to be 1 hour of play. Maybe a little over time. Every basketball game will go for the exact same amount of play time excluding over time. But a fight can end in seconds by ko or submission, or it could be a 15 minute war. That element of never knowing when that one punch will land or that one armbar will be pulled off, thats why mma is the fastest growing sport in the world. Pro wrestling, its simply soap operas for males. And UFC is quickly stealing their demographic.

No way can the same be said for any other sport. Here in MA, I've been to a few sporting events. Boston Celtics vs. Indiana Pacers in 05, Celtics vs Magic in 06, and vs Cavaliers this year. All the fans there were respectful and looked normal. I watched UFC 97 at hooters, and my God, the amount of idiots I saw there amazed me. So many fat, jobless idiots screaming. I don't remember what fight it was, but I think it was Cantell/Cane. When those two guys went to the ground, the people at hooters started to scream 'you homos, get up and fight like men', or something like that. They were like in their 30s and it was embarrassing. I never returned. I just find it funny that you think you can criticize someones IQ. Have you noticed the amount of idiots that watch UFC? I don't think you would want to go to a bar to watch a PPV. No wonder why Mayweather said MMA was for beer drinkers. I think he went and watched a UFC PPV at hooters.
