I'm a huge Bas fan. The guy was way ahead of his time, and was, at one point, the greatest fighter ever.

You really can't get any better than Frank Shamrock vs Bas Rutten(Pick any of them), Bas Rutten vs Jason Delucia(Any of them), and vs Minoru Suzuki(Again, pick any of them).

The Delucia fights made you realize how scary Bas was. My heart goes out to Delucia's liver.

Charisma, skill, & presence all represent Bas. Really, I'd go as far as to say he's the greatest fighter to ever represent MMA. My all time favorite is Frank Shamrock, but he really doesn't compare to El Guapo.

Ok, that's enough of my Bas fanboy-ism.

Agree 100%!

Rutten is kind of like the Leonardo da Vinci of MMA. It's like when you hear a band like REM release songs like "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People" in 1991 and profoundly influence the sound of the bands that come after them for a decade (Green Day did the same thing, and, for good or for ill, so did Mariah Carey). Bas Rutten was the first real well-rounded MMA fighter. I mean, how many fighters can you name, off the top of your head, that start in MMA with a striking background, then train themselves to be submission artists so good they can trade keylocks with the best in the sport?

If Bas Rutten was fighting today, not only would he be a dominating champion, he'd be the biggest draw in MMA. He's also the author of the only really good MMA reference book (shown above). Anyone interested in knowing more about MMA should have a look at them.

Rutten also has some great videos out. His "Leathal Streetfighting" is hilarious! Completely useless for self-defence, but some of the stuff he says is priceless!

Favourite Rutten quote - Bas offering his opinion of the cinematography of a fight: (From the commentary track of Rutten's career highlights in Pancrase)

"There's a fantastic shot of the referee's ass..."

"What's crazy about standin' toe-to-toe and saying 'I am'?"
- Rocky Balboa

So true. So, so true. Rutten's fights don't seem outdated either.

I'm going to compare Bas to the movie Aliens(Or the whole trilogy(We'll leave Alien vs Predator out of this one)). Aliens was original, cool, and fun to watch. As the result, everyone started copying the movie, and they were just seen as bad imitations of something great. Fighters often tried to put it all together like Bas, but some failed in doing so.

I'll admit, I'm not very familiar with any of Bas' fights. I've heard SO much about him, yet I've never bothered to go out of my way to see one of his fights. I should kick myself in the ass and get on youtube to find some fights, shouldn't I?

Yes, TheJame, yes you should. Youtube has a nice collection of Bas fights. Last I checked they had his second fight with Maurice Smith. Fun, fun stuff. The famous "Frank makes crazy faces!" fight(Bas Rutten vs Frank Shamrock) is on there as well. One of my all time favorites.

Awesome, awesome fight between Shamrock and Rutten. Rutten's palm strikes are indeed badass.

I'll be watching Maurice Smith vs. Rutten shortly. Thanks for the suggestions.
