Don't get me wrong i'd love to see Chael and Silva go at it again but the end of the fight wasn't controversial! The outcome cannot be questioned so why he deserves and immediate rematch is beyond me.
If in the superbowl one team completely outclasses the other but loses the game to a last minute touchdown, would you ask for a rematch cos it wasn't fair?
In England we call it a smash and grab victory - maybe not 100% deserved but 100% legitimate, so let Silva fight Belfort, and if Chael keeps fighting like that he'll get another shot soon enough anyways.

There is no comparision in other sports since if a team in say hockey was that dominant the score would be 20-0 and one last minute goal couldn't win them the fight. Not complaining just saying your comparisson doesn't really work.

How do you figure? Vitor's striking is better than any other fighter's that Anderson has fought thus far in his career. If someone like Chael Sonnen can hurt Silva striking, then I am very confident that Belfort could. Belfort is easily the better striker out of him and everyone that Silva has fought.
Vitor's striking may be better than anybody Silva has fought but only for about 2 1/2 minutes till Vitor mentally breaks. Belfort doesn't have the heart he needs to go to the deep end.

my point is that we pretty much already know vitor will get koed or tkoed or whatever, we know silva will beat him

Despite Chael's awesome display I voted for Silva-Belfort.

You simply cannot keep handing guys championship matches "just because". For the rankings to mean anything they must be respected. While Chael did a wonderful job Saturday night he still botched at the last second. It is what the difference between a champion and a challenger really is. Chael SHOULD have won that fight. Silva DID because he was able to maintain composure and apply correct technique.

Vitor, while thrust into this situation, deserves his shot at the gold.

Chael will make a comeback I'm sure and at that time he'll get his rematch. Until then let the guys who deserve their shots have them.

Exactly THIS. Chael is great, but these title shots should be earned otherwise it devalues them. I could understand the Shogun/Machida 1 thing as there was a somewhat clear winner who got taken the piss out of. But Chael needs at least two wins over decent competition to be in with a chance again. I think he'll come back strong and probably finish Silva next time around.

After heavy discussion in the Chael Sonnen thread, I changed my decision. To many valid points. I am going for Silva vs Belfort. Sonnen will get another shot with Silva, soon I see him running through people to get another shot...

I am interested to see the Belfort fight and didnt even realize that he was the number one contender. I am a huge AS fan, but I am a big Belfort fan as well so it will be a painful fight to watch but either way im happy.

Is UFC Brazil 3 too long to sit on a Silva-Belfort matchup?

I kind of like Jake Rossen's suggestion that Sonnen be matched up with Wanderlei to determine a title challenger post-Belfort.

And where does Okami fit into all of this? My head hurts.

But one thing, I believe, should be clear -- Sonnen should have to win another fight before getting his rematch. A loss is a loss, especially when you are knocked out or subkmitted.

As much as I enjoyed Sonnen/Silva, I'd rather see Silva/Belfort while Sonnen fights Wanderlei. Winner of the Wanderlei/Sonnen fight gets the winner of the Silva/Belfort. I think that'd be the best way to lay it out.

Plus, I think Sonnen needs some time to work on his submission game. I don't think he could make the necessary adjustments in 5-7 months.

Vitor-Silva definitely!

Firstly: Sonnen did what he needed to do. He took the fight to Anderson, punnished him like never before him, but at the end he lost. He had his chance, now he needs to be fair-play and wait for his shot again. If we are using this argument that he dominated and was so close to victory...hey, why not Brock-Carwin instant rematch. It's kinda the same story, only shorter.
It's not like this was a controversial decision (Penn-Edgar. It was a submission victory.
Secondly: Vitor was supposed to fight Silva in april annyway. The fight was scheduled, they started promoting the fight, they met in Abu Dhabi for photos and a conference, i believe. So, if it weren't for that injury, Silva-Belfort would have happened already.
Thirdly: Now that Silva has beaten the best BJJ guy in the MW division (and the UFC) and the best wrestler at MW, i think it's time to fight the best boxer at MW (the best boxer except him of course).
If he wins this one also - than he has every right to scream he's the best ever.

Yeah Bobby, but what is Silva supposed to do in the meantime? Just wait!
Okami should face Belcher or Wanderlei imo. Or winner Marquardt/Palhares?! Complicated...:)

Like i've said: Silva has beaten the best grappler and the best wrestler at MW. Now it's time to fight the best boxer. That's just how i see it.
And i am sure Belfort will bring his A-game to this fight, including his mental game. And i think his confidence will be at an all time high, knowing that Sonnen was able to tag Silva on the feet.

I dunno Toxic, it seems like Vitor's in a different place now. Part of it may be working with Randy, and part of it may be just growing up, but he seems more mature and more composed now. He overcame adversity -- a hand injury and an early knockdown -- in the James Zikic fight. He didn't allow himself to get frustrated against Martin, whether caught by punches or taken down.
I believe those are better indicators of where Vitor's at nowadays than his performance against Hendo four years ago or that against Saku way back in 1999.
Also, having Randy and Shawn Tompkins in his corner really seems to work for him.

Those were against guys who were nowhere near Vitor's level. Mental toughness is not IMO someting you learn you either have it or you don't.

belfort wins this fight against AS and he'll probably do it easily. belfort by brutal gnp. if that doesn't happen by some odd chance, belfort will outpoint him on the standup. AS is overrated and belort is very underrated.
