11/08/10 - Source: Bisping likely to get Sonnen or Cote after Akiyama

Michael Bisping is still more than a month away from facing Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 in October, but his follow-on fight is already under consideration.

Sources close to the situation tell Fighters Only that Bisping is likely to find himself facing either Chael Sonnen or Patrick Cote depending on the outcome of his fight with Akiyama.

Bisping has been eager to earn a title shot for some time and if he can get past Akiyama he is “very likely” to find himself matched with Sonnen, the sources say.

If he loses to Akiyama, he is more likely to find himself matched with Patrick Cote, a former title challenger himself (UFC 90) who is looking to return to the upper echelon of the UFC middleweight division following time away injured.

Sonnen is coming off a loss to middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC 117 lat weekend. He lost by triangle in the fifth round after dominating most of the fight until that point.

Cote is coming off a loss to Alan Belcher at UFC 113, his first fight since suffering an ACL tear during his fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 90.

Bisping was being put in the frame for a fight with Belcher if he got past Akiyama but Belcher recently suffered a detached retina and is expected to be away from the Octagon for some time.

The British middleweight is coming off a win over Dan Miller at UFC 114 and is 1-1 in his last two, having dropped a decision to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110.
The trash talk will be epic.

Ok so if bisping is 2-2 in his last 4 fights including one of the most devastating kos of all time. now he fights a guy that just lost to chris leban who took the fight after fighting just a few weeks earlier. Now if he wins he gets to fight for the #1 contender spot. Dont tell me the ufc is doing just about everything short of fixing fight to make him champ.

I hope he does fight chael and chael beats him so bad that you won't be able to recognize him after the fight.

Beat him bad with what? His pillow fists. IMO he has some very weak ground and pound. He is a great wrestler but he can not finsh many people. But even so. In this fight i really dont have a favorite. I am not a fan of either guy.

IF Bisping beats Akiyama (and I don't think he will) I don't see how beating Bisping puts Sonnen right back at title contention. If anything Sonnen will need to beat Bisping and the winner of Marquardt vs. Palhares to get a shot. Also, it's Palhares, I don't think that'd be enough. He'll have to beat Marquardt again I think.

We shall soon see, but I wouldn't mind watching Bisping vs. Sonnen. The trash talk really would be hilarious as others have mentioned.

The pre-fight shenanigans will be hilarious. I think it'll be pretty entertaining actually.

Cote would probably rock em, so for the sake of Bispings career he shoudl win against Akiyama to propel himself to Chael. Otherwise two back to back losses means he's on the outs...

So the bottom line here is Sonnen is one win away from a rematch. And IMO Akiyama v Bispin is a 50/50 fight.

If Akiyama wins, is he fighting Sonnen for #1 contendership status?

Wanderlai, Okami, Leben are all more deserving - than either Bisping or Akiyama. A win in one of their next match-ups against each other would be even more punctuating.

Whatever, I want to see the rematch just as much as anyone.

Because if Bisping or Akiyama ran the table they would each have 3 quality to high quality wins in their last 4 fights. Now if Okami won another fight against a quality guy in that same timeframe would I give him the shot? Absolutely but apparently he needs to win 50 fights in a row for Joe Silva/Dana to give him his title shot.

Akiyama would have an absurd amount of exposure also if you think about it. Beats Belcher in an exciting fight on the most watched UFC card ever, loses to Leben in a great fight on the second most watched UFC card ever in the comainevent, beats Bisping in the mainevent of a card on spike that would be watched by millions of people, beats Sonnen in either the mainevent or comainevent of a PPV. That would probably be 3 countdown shows he would be featured on also.

Wow!
That is akward.
He hasn't beaten Akiyama yet and alrewady they're talking about his next opponent. That's stupid. It's like Akiyamna is a F - level figher.
On one hand i hope Akiyama beats him ad ruins his plans.
But on the other hand if he wins, i hope he gets Sonnen, because Sonnen will beat the s***t out of Bisping.
If he fights Sonnen, it will be like Dennis Kang 1st round all over again: Bisping will get tooled and pounded like a potato sack. But the big difference would be: Sonnen won't gas after 5 minutes, he will smash Bisping for 15 minutes.
Can't wait.

Would it really be that hard to just throw akiyama out of the 120 Main event, and put Sonnen in, and make it a #1 contender's match?

Would be huge wins for Michael Bisping if he could pull them out. Could get him the title shot he's been seeking for years, wins over Akiyama and Sonnen would be massive. I actually think he could beat Chael too. His ground game is actually quite impressive. He handled Denis Kang on the ground whilst rocked with ease. Kang was passing fairly regularly, but Bisping was getting back to guard with ease. I could definitely see him pulling out a submission off his back, but there's also a very good chance that Sonnen wrecks him for 15 minutes. That's probably the likely outcome too.

Also, think of the trash talk. It'd be beyond epic. Imagine another TUF US vs UK season with Bisping and Chael as coaches, that'd surpass even Rampage-Rashad and Serra-Hughes. Sort it out Dana.
