Is there one last title run left in Matt Hughes?

Not much more than a year or so ago, Matt Hughes looked done for. There were wispers of retirement, due to the fact that Hughes seemingly couldnt compete with the elite in the welterweight division. Yet he is currently riding a 3 fight win streak, and his last fight against "big dog" Hughes looked great picking up the quick submission win.
Is there one last title run left in the hall of famers ageing legs? Or have his last 3 wins come against fighters in the same boat as his.... You could argue that Renzo is past it, and that ricardo almieda isnt exactly elite. But a win against Matt Serra, and the fashion in which he beat Almieda has me wondering...

A Matt Hughes vs GSP fight would be awesome one more time. Maybe he does have at least a run where he can work his way up to a title shot again.

I can only see one reason why I'd be interested in that fight... to see Hughes get beaten down again. Other than that, it's kind of pointless.

If he gets the right fights, he could definitely get a title shot again. He just has to watch out for Fitch and Koscheck.

I really don't think so. I think Hughes has lost a split second. You can tell he wants to shoot or strike, but he just doesn't get it off in time. I don't see him getting around the other top guys.

At this point I would love to see him take on one of three guys Nate Diaz, Diego Sanchez, or B.J. Penn if he can beat any one of those guys than yes he should get one last shot at the title. Then...yeah...I guess give him a shot at GSP for a fourth time.

Why would he get a title shot for beating two unranked WWs or a LW? That makes no sense. He would have to beat Fitch, Kos, Alves, Kampmann, or Shields to even be in the discussion.

Same reason Shogun got his shot for beating two guys on their way out of the UFC, the bar is always lower for a draw. I think Hughes is being set up as an injury replacement contender, someone gets hurt Hughes will come in and fight for the title. So I believe the UFC will protect him by not giving him a fight he has no chance at winning.

Jake Shields will likely get a shot at GSP next so the timing won't work out. I could see him fighting Hughes but I don't think Dana would sign off on it. It seems to me you are going to see Shields Kampmann/GSP/Fitch.

Kampmann is only in the top ten by default, I'm going to go by the logic that he will be losing to Shields and he might be pushed out of the top 15.

Kos has his title shot set up for him, I'm also assuming that Dan Hardy is going after him next with a loss.

Alves has issues, he may never fight at WW again. Fighting once a year and missing weight are big issues. Right now Alves is the guy who if a guy in the UFC is on steroids it's Alves. So I don't even know how long Alves is going to stay in the UFC or at WW.

Diego Sanchez needs to beat Paulo Thiago but once or if that happens he's going to be ranked again and fairly highly. Nate Diaz should be ranked after his last two performances, I can see him getting hot-shoted a title.

The entire Welterweight Division is going to be re-organized after October don't be shocked if you don't see three or four guys move up in the rankings and other guys move out.

Anything can happen, especially with the help of Dana White (if he, ofcourse, "wants" to give Hughes a last shot). We have seen multiple times how fighters get relatively easy fights to 'earn' a title shot, and we've seen some even triumphed.

_RIVAL_ 09-07-2010 09:17 AM

I think he does..

And I have a feeling that he's working on his striking alot more than anybody knows right now..

Now he's looked good against 2 opponents back to back that that have zero to offer in the striking dept, but either way it's gotten the job done and given him confidnence in his stand up...

Give Matt Hughes dangersous standup. He'll destroy alot of UFC WWs. That really was the only hole in his game.
