Current WEC featherweight champion, Jose Aldo will defend the UFC’s newly created 145 pound version of the title when he makes his octagon debut at UFC 125 on January 1st in Las Vegas, Nevada, although his opponent is currently unknown.

In a media teleconference call held earlier today, UFC President, Dana White announced that the promotion will be introducing two new titles, one at 135 pounds and the other at 145 pounds.

“We’re going to be adding two new championship divisions: the bantamweight at 135lbs and the featherweight at 145lbs. The two new divisions feature Jose Aldo, who will now automatically be recognised as the UFC featherweight champion, and WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.”

“[He] is actually fighting December 16th [against Scott Jorgensen] and should he win that fight then he will be recognised as the UFC bantamweight champion. We’re also announcing a new deal with Versus, we’re going to be doing four fights in 2011.”

The promotion has already revealed that the WEC lightweight title fight between Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis will determine the next challenger for the UFC strap, taking on either Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard at some point next year.

I love this descision... More UFC gold for Black House :)

Aldo had to stay champ, simple as that... His weight class will not be imediatly affected by the UFC roster in the same way that WEC LW will be...

Perhaps people like KenFlo and Edgar (Whenever he loses his title) will move down a class to fight at 145, which seems more natural for both... Interesting fights there :)

I think KenFlo is already to skinny for 155 Budhi.

I don't know.. I am not that enthusiastic too see 145's and BM's on a UFC PPV. :( I believe there is a huge gap of Skilllevel between those divisions.

I mean of course Aldo (Henderson) and Dominick/Faber are great. But the rest??

I actually really liked that 155 was the smallest devision in the UFC.

But I do like that we see the UFC brand around 35 times in a year because of this :)

The fact that those two divisions are now also labeled "UFC" will make them much more attractive to fighters all over the world, so over time they will become much deeper... And no matter how deep they are, the entertainment value for people who just love seeing a good scrap is undeniable :)

And FW could be awesome... Add people like KenFlo, Edgar, Guida, Griffin and so on... Who's to say that one of those people (sans Edgar of course) isn't the challenger for Aldo at UFC 125? (Although my best guess would be Homminick, but perhaps Dana wants to start this thing off big!)

I'm really, really loving this! :D

I always kinda hoped they would bring back the heavier divisions in the WEC and use it sorta like minor leagues for the UFC but I'm cool with the merger. Wonder how many small lw's are gonna drop too.

Would love to see Penn down at 145 since I'm sure he could make the weight but doubt he'd be willing. Could see Edgar dropping down if he loses to Maynnard too.

How much does Sherk cut? He'd be a beefcake studmuffin against guys with less than a foot of reach advantage:thumbsup:

Does this make Jose Aldo the first fighter to hold belts in two different organizations:)

Guys of championship with belts from different organizations:

Silva - Cage Rage, Shooto, UFC champ

Rua - Pride, UFC

Shields - Shooto, Rumble on the Rock, Elite XC, Strikeforce champ and UFC title shot coming up.

There's a lot of old dogs/middle-tier guys in UFC as well.

Really if you look at it the one guy that gets screwed out from this is probably George Sotiropoulos. He was the guy with one win from getting a LHW championship shot.

Instead Ben Hendo gets auto shot.

UFC fans get taste of what Cruz and Aldo look like.

Frankie Edgar would get his a$$ handed to him by Aldo at both divisions (IMO). Aldo's faster, stronger, more athletic, quicker, hits a hell of a harder and he doesn't get taken down.

I'm fine with FW every now and then but what I don't want to see is a UFC with a bunch of FW/BW fights every other event. I'm not sure I even want 135lbers in the UFC unless it's Gina Carano fighting.

Jose Aldo will be the UFC FW champ for a long damn time though I reckon.

i agreee with bobby i dont know if i actually like this, now there will be less fights for people trying to get starts in the LW,WW,MW,LHW and HW divs because FW and BW will take up a lot of matches, it just seems too big now, 7 divisions is a lot and we already have a lot of fights.

This is a great decision for the UFC to make. Sorry if I'm out of the loop, been in a stupor for days! But I always considered the WEC the lower tier.

Then all of a sudden these tremendous quality fighters were putting on amazing dominant performances. I wondered why the UFC didn't open up those two divisions for them. Now I guess they are. Which makes me very excited!
