LAS VEGAS -- UFC heavyweight contender Shane Carwin says he's pulling out of a high-profile New Year's Day bout with a back injury.

Carwin (12-1) announced his decision on his blog Tuesday. He was expected to fight Roy Nelson in the co-main event at UFC 125 in the MGM Grand Garden.

He says he has unspecified damage to his back that may require surgery.

Carwin was unbeaten until his second-round submission loss to Brock Lesnar last July.

The UFC has no obvious replacement for Carwin in his fight against Nelson, which could have set up the winner with a chance to face new heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez later in 2011.

Frankie Edgar will defend his UFC lightweight title against Gray Maynard in the main event at UFC 125.

Personally I think they should throw Meathead in the deep end here. I think he would give Roy hell.

the amount of ok with this i would be. no body better to test roy instead a monstrous power guy, then a guy whose, probably better at him than everything.

That's actually not a bad idea, that would be good if it wasn't a No 1 contender fight.

Ideally Brock needs to be back fighting soon while Carwin is off, so winners from xfighter vs Brock and xfighter vs Nelson fight for No 1 contender.

How long is Carwin out for? Really messes things up.

Nog or Ben Rothwell.

EDIT: Its to bad Rampage is already booked to fight Machida because he would make a great replacement looking back at his shit talk on TUF.

Mir makes for the most interesting fight.

These are the two top UFC grappling HWs. What better time to make that fight happen then now.

Both have KO stand-up, Nelson has the better chin. It would be an eliminator fight with a win and then a another win over Schaubb, Madsen or Mccorkle making them #1 contender.

Schaubb, Madsen, Mir, Mccorkle or Nelson are next in line. Both Brock and Shane are two fights away, though Shane is getting old as $hit.

I can only really see mir taking his place, unless they choose to push schaub. I would hope nelson would beat mir, would love to see that. Massive shame this fight isn't gonna be nelson vs carwin cause i was so excited to see if nelson could take punishment from carwin like he did against JDS.

Seriously why are people bringin up Shchuab? Seriously Roy has had 3 fights in the UFC in less that a year and we are already doing rematches? It wasn't close or controversial. No rematch necessary.

I would not mind seeing Frank Mir fill in for Carwin. I think it could end up being a really good fight no matter where it takes place.

You could also maybe put Pat Berry in their with Nelson if he is healed, but Nelson would most likely just tool him on the ground.

I would've said either Mir or Rothwell. Rothwell had a fight with the #2 contender and so did Nelson with Cain and JDS. And Frank vs. Nelson would've been good because of both of their bjj backgrounds and Nelson's ability to take a punch combined with Frank's improved standup.

I know he's not sure what he is doing with his life right now, movies/mma/lhw or hw, but I would like to see Randy vs Roy Nelson.

I think it would be a great fight, I know it probably has no real significance to the HW title picture but it would still be an interesting and entertaining fight.

A Randy Vs Roy fight would be great for PPV buys too, and could be a good last fight for Randy as it seems of late he is looking to retire soon.
