Does Brock Lesnar's Loss Mean That Boxing Is Tops in MMA?

Only a couple of months ago, Randy Couture humiliated aging boxing champ James Toney at UFC 118 and pretty much everyone concluded that was the very last nail in the coffin of the tired old MMA vs Boxing debate.

Now that Brock Lesnar has been beaten up by Cain Velasquez though, the boxing community is talking about MMA again, and this time things are looking pretty good for the sweet science. At least to hear them tell it.

While MMA fans are going to violently disagree with both of the boxing writers I'm going to quote, let's play nice in the comments. Each writer makes some strong points to counter-balance the whoppers they unload.

The important thing from my vantage point as an MMA booster is that they're talking about MMA at all. That's always a sign that we've just had a major event and are at the center of the combat sports world at the moment. Pacquaio's next fight will change that in November for a while, but we'll be back in December with Georges St. Pierre vs Josh Koscheck at UFC 124.
Il be honest, i dont even understand this article. What does Brock Lesnars loss have to do with Boxing and why would it proof that boxing is TOPS in MMA?? W/E that means.
The reason Cain won isnt only because of his boxing BUT more for the fact that he had good wrestling and Lesnar was not able to take him down. :confused02:

in your quote it says he's going to quote some writers but i didn't see any quotes ...

The only possible relevance are:
- Cain's heritage
- Cain's method of the beat down he unleashed on Lesnar

other than that.. there really is no relevance to the 'Boxing' world.. i think they're grasping for something that's not there.. or maybe they're trying very hard hoping it would shine a positive light on their sport.. which will never happen.. Boxing compared to MMA is so 1-dimensional and would put me to sleep .. Watching Boxing is worst than a typical Shield's match ..

Absolutely NO WAY!!!

We're talking here about M M A !!!
That means: Mixed Marial Arts!
A specific sport that incorporates so many fighting techniques: wrestling, karate, *****, BJJ, boxing, muay-thai, kick-boxing...and other.

You could have a boxer submit a BJJ guy...or a wrestler outstrike a muay-thai specialist...

That's the beauty of this sport.

When it comes to the "Lesnar" subject...it's all about his inability to take a punch!!!
As much as i like Brock...he needs to learn how to react when taking a punch in his face.
That's it!

This is another reason I want to see James Toney fight a Muay Thai stylist in the UFC, like Pat Barry or something.

I'm fairly certain a diverse, technical and cautious MMA striker could out do a boxer standing up. Watch out for those leg kicks.

As for Cain vs Lesnar, if the point is all you need is one skill to have boxing dominance in MMA (takedown defense), then it's erroneous. There are many techniques that are available to take a person down, you need to learn an entire discipline (wrestling/judo) to stop then. Then you would have learned 2 disciplines and will have become (gasp!) a mixed martial artist.

It's the same argument as saying , all a wrestler needs is one skill, stopping submissions from the bottom, and they'll dominate, ok, but that isn't easy, you have to learn an entire discipline to do that.

No, it just means Brock doesn't like being punched. Also, it was Cain's familiarity with wrestling that allowed him to stuff TD's and spring up so naturally when he was taken down. Cain is just a well rounded MMA'ist, so well rounded MMA'ist trumped a one dimensional fighter.

I agree. The guy who wrote the article was trying to make a point about the folks claiming wrestling > boxing over the Toney COuture fight, but he forgot that Cains wrestling is what nullified Brock's wrestling and allowed him to unload with his hands.

That is a pathetic article. A boxer would have to learn a lot more than just avoiding takedowns. Wrestlers and Judoka train their entire lives to take people down... Even if a boxer keeps it standing how are they really going to fare the first time they aren't separated in the clinch, or are getting their legs destroyed by kicks.

This article is an example of someone speaking in regard to a topic where they don't know what they don't even know...

nope.

wrestling is still the tops in mma. and boxing by itself will never hold a candle to wrestling, judo or bjj by themselves. but in this case it was great wrestler vs great wrestler with better striking that won it for cain.

I read that article by Magno, and why any self-respecting MMA fan would pay that troll any mind is beyond me. The man even admits to not being an MMA fan, watching it on rare occasions and what-not, so who is he really to offer up such a bold opinion on the sport? Pure boxing fans can't comment on MMA any more than pure MMA fans can comment on boxing, and frankly, I'm tired of the fact that both sides feel the need to sling mud. Both combat sports can co-exist, though MMA will arguably be the more popular of the two as Dana and Co. actually give their fans big fights between top contenders. Boxing does not do this, hence the drop in interest and buzz.

I also had a chuckle at his 'to be effective in MMA, all a boxer need do is learn how to avoid a takedown'. He says it as though it's really that simple. Here we have mixed martial artists whom have been training for years upon years, yet still most seemingly have difficulties with TDD. And yet a boxer is going to waltz on in, learn how to stuff a take down in four months, and dominate in the UFC? Keep telling yourself it's that simple. With boxing, you're thinking hit and dodge. With MMA, you're thinking hit, dodge, avoid kicks, avoid take downs, avoid the clinch, avoid flying knees, avoid... you get the idea.

Basing your entire opinion of the sport off of Cain vs. Brock, especially when Cain used a variety of skills to defeat Lesnar, just demonstrates sheer ignorance. Again, don't feed the troll.
