This is brilliant. MMA being exposed to the media in an intellectual manner.

Damn Volkman is a ******* idiot. No athletes give their manager a 20% cut. His gripes about the new healthcare plan seem legitimate but he should probably be pissed at republicans for demanding private insurance stay in place not Obama.

In regards to the 20% cut. Is it really that unrealistic? For a UFC guy it would be very high, seeing as the UFC books all your fights for you.

However a promoter / manager in boxing will surely take a 20% cut at least. The likes of Don King I am reffering to.

I am ignorant of this subject, so if you could back up what you said it would be much appreciated.

Boxing managers are often also the promoter and their contracts are widely considered to be unseemly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_agent

With an MMA fighter on the level of Volkmann the agent essentially has next to nothing to do aside from negotiating a contract. He should be paying around 8% tops.

I'm with Osmium, 20% seems crazy high like.

Still seems like a nice guy and good to see MMA get more mainstreamish publicity.

You guys are forgetting that it's the manager's job to secure sponsorship. Hell, just look at Mitrione in his last fight. His bargain bin manager only got him 5k for sponsorship on a televised event. That is nothing.

80 percent of a lot sounds better than 92 percent of a little.

You typically have separate percentages and the sponsorship one is higher but 20% is considered high for that as well. His manager didn't even get him a good first contract there are plenty of guys who get 15-22k to show. MMA fighters apparently have awful managers though a lot of them are probably converted boxing managers.

Manager percentages aren't skill based a lot of the top managers actually take lower percentages than average to help sign top earners. Even if they were though how much more do you really think they can get for a guy like Volkmann. We are talking about a difference of 10-12 percent on pay and probably around 5-8 percent on sponsorship money.
