Houston Alexander became very popular after just 2 bouts. That's what I call meteoric rise. Cro Cop has never risen in the UFC (let alone meteoric), he was just walking and glowing brighter than any other fighter due to his success in PRIDE. Sylvia, Arlovski, Sonnen and Liddell have been around for years, so you can hardly call their rise meteoric... they've earned it. And Machida was building himself for years and even longer than most of the UFC fighters. His losses to Shogun and Rampage do not mean that he's done. He may not get the title back, but he's still a very good fighter.
Speaking of "meteoric" fall, Cro Cop, Arlovski, Liddell, Wanderlei, Vera, Houston Alexander and Tim Sylvia surely define this term by their most recent performances.
The bottom line, Houston Alexander is like a star which shined too bright for too short period of time. My guess that luck was a factor in the beginning of his UFC career. Jardine proved to be very Koable, but a victory over Sakara was great.
